Sydney Thunder spinner Chris Green cops Big Bash League ban over illegal action

UPDATE: A short-form star who recently signed a record six-year contract with the Sydney Thunder has taken his ban for an illegal action on the chin, detailing his plans for a swift return in a classy social media message.

Chris Green has refused to spit the dummy about his stunning BBL ban for chucking, with the Sydney Thunder pin-up valiantly declaring he will fight his way back.

Cricket Australia dropped a bombshell on Wednesday in suspending the spinner for 90 days over an illegal action and will have to be retested before being allowed to bowl again.

But Green has copped his punishment on the chin.

Green issued a graceful message on social media in which he vowed to win back his livelihood on the Twenty20 circuit.

“Gutted I couldn’t be out there with my Thunder BBL teammates (on Wednesday night). “Whilst the news surrounding my action is disappointing, I respect the process and the results of the test,” wrote Green on twitter.

“Perspective is a powerful thing with what is currently happening in our country.”

Green said he would immediate begin working on his action in a bid to get back on the field for the Kolkata Knight Riders – who recently picked him up for $41,000 in the IPL.

Although his ban will now rub him out of the first week of the IPL, the T20 specialist has vowed to overcome the issue which could threaten the successful career he has built roaming the world from franchise to franchise.

Australian national selector Trevor Hohns told Green late last year that he was in the frame for the Twenty20 World Cup to take place on home soil in October.

Green has a better domestic T20 record than incumbent Australian spinner, Ashton Agar.

“Through the help of my coaches, I will be doing everything I can to get back to doing what I love with ball in hand,” he wrote.

“I would like to thank everyone for their messages, I am very fortunate to have the best people and fans around to support me!

“Work starts tomorrow.”

Green was reported by umpires Nathan Johnstone, Mike Graham-Smith and third umpire Paul Wilson after a match against the Melbourne Stars on January 2.

Other players were apparently suspicious of his action.

Dan Christian tweeted before a match against the Thunder in December that he would be sure to get “thrown some off spinners before Thursday night’s game”.

To the naked eye it is Green’s faster ball that causes the problem. Former South Africa spinner and South Australia captain Johan Botha was reported twice for throwing in his career and had problems with that delivery.

It is difficult for an off spinner to develop a faster ball off a short run that doesn’t involve some flexing of the elbow.

Green recently signed an extraordinary six year contract - the longest in BBL history - with the Thunder.

Green, who plays T20 around the world but does not have a state contract, said recently he has not given up on the hope of representing Australia.

“I certainly haven’t given up any aspirations to play one day cricket, four day cricket or five day cricket,” the 26-year-old said.

“My dream along with many other cricketers is to represent Australia and play for Australia in all three forms.

“Right now, my opportunities are only coming in T20 cricket, so that’s where I’ve got to go and develop my game.”

Green underwent testing at the National Cricket Centre on Sunday, January 5, under the guidance of Dr Luke Kelly.

Results from the test were made available to Cricket Australia on Wednesday and he was immediately withdrawn from Wednesday night’s match, although he could have played as a batsman.

Head of Cricket Operations at CA Peter Roach said the player would be allowed to play club cricket with the consent and supervision of Cricket NSW.

Green’s action has come under serious scrutiny.

“We’d like to commend Chris and the Thunder for the way they have approached this process with complete co-operation and respect.

“Chris undertook testing at the earliest possible time and satisfactorily replicated his bowling action in the controlled environment.

“We look forward to working with Chris in the coming months and conducting further testing once the suspension period has elapsed.”

The Thunder coach Shane Bond stood by the side’s star.

“Chris is a crowd favourite, and he’s also an extremely popular member of our club,” Bond said.

“Sydney Thunder signed Chris to a long-term deal with the club because of his leadership qualities and obvious talent. He’s an important part of our future and the club will support him through this process.”
