ADELAIDE STRIKERS vs SYDNEY THUNDER PREVIEW
Adelaide Oval, Tuesday 7:15pm AEDT
After a washout in Round 1 the Strikers finally get their BBL13 campaign underway against the Thunder.
The matchup looks to work in Adelaide’s favour, with the Strikes having an extremely strong record against the Thunder in recent years, including Adelaide winning the last three meetings and the infamous world record low-scoring game where Adelaide bowled out Sydney for just 15 runs.
The Thunder made the finals last season, but were smashed by the Heat in their opener last week, with plenty of questions surrounding their batting depth.
SHORT SQUARED
Adelaide will rely on two guys with the same surname this season, both of who are spinning all-rounders that can hit bombs: Matt and D’Arcy Short.
Liam ‘Stats Guy McAllion, Marcus Bazzano and Leo Mullaly break down the dominance of Matt Short - after coming second in runs last season - but also examine whether or not D’Arcy Short can hold up his end of the bargain.
The former Hurricane had a career-worst season in BBL12, with no wickets to his name and averaging just 17 with the bat.
But will a fresh team could see D’Arcy Short back to his best?
The Cricket Today panel aren’t convinced, positing that he may bowl even more half-trackers than last season and lack a bit of batting confidence, meaning they’re worried for what lies ahead for the new Striker.
WHO WINS?
All three experts on the Cricket Today Podcast agree that Adelaide should get a strong victory tonight over Sydney. Much like the Scorchers, the Strikers have over half their team as all rounders that can keep the opposition guessing.
Adelaide are also extremely tough to beat at home, with a 10-6 record at the Adelaide Oval across the last few seasons, while the Thunder will still have the ‘all out for 15’ game in the back of their minds.
TIP: Adelaide Strikers
BBL SUPERCOACH PLAYER TO AVOID
Spencer Johnson - $114,700
Brought up on the latest Cricket Today Podcast, Leo Mullaly points out that whule Spencer Johnson was one of the most picked players before the start of the season, but he might be worth shipping out of your SuperCoach sides now.
Still a strong bowler, the Heat quick only had one wicket across his team’s opening two games and didn’t threaten the stumps anywhere near as much as teammates Xavier Bartlett and Michael Neser.
Going down $10,800 in SuperCoach value already and with a huge breakeven of 72 ahead of Round 2, he looks set to drop in price even more this week and it is worth looking elsewhere for a fast bowler in your side.
