SuperCoach BBL: Watch out Warnie – Isa is coming for you!

Can Isa take down Shane in SuperCoach BBL this coming season? She’s put together a squad for Round 1 that she thinks will be the team to kick off her campaign with a bang.

Once again, Shane Warne has suckered me into another SuperCoach BBL season, and I’m determined that, this time, the team that I’ve put together is good enough to win the whole thing … or at least knock Shane off!

BATTING

With the sort of form that Chris Lynn is in in the T10 competition in Abu Dhabi it’s impossible to not want him in your side for the start of the season – particularly given his Brisbane Heat have two matches in the first round of the SuperCoach season, meaning he’ll be earning double points.

Similarly, I’ve got Max Bryant and Ben Cutting – who is available as a Dual Position Player as both BAT and BWL – from the Heat in my side for the start of the season, and for the moment Cutting gets the captaincy armband, which means he’ll earn double double points for me as the skipper of my side.

A couple of home boys round out my batting ranks, with both the Thunder’s Alex Hales and his cross-town rival James Vince, from the Sixers, in my side.

On the bench I’m stashing Matt Short from the Strikers who has started his white ball season well in the Marsh Cup but has a bye in Round 1, as well as the underage teen wunderkind Jake Fraser-McGurk from the Renegades.

KEEPING

Like most, I’m all aboard the Josh Philippe train, with the Sixers having such a friendly draw at the start of the year, with two double scoring rounds in the first three rounds of the season. It will be interesting to see if exciting Englishman Tom Banton gets the gloves for the Heat, but for the moment James Peirson seems a solid option to have on the bench.

BOWLING

This is where I’m really looking to set my side apart and maximise SuperCoach scoring opportunities, with every player starting on my field set to play double matches in Round 1 of the game.

Both of my Thunder choices are flexible DPP options, with South African-born Chris Green and local lad Daniel Sams big chances of impacting with both bat and ball. The same is true of Tom Curran, with the Englishman one of the best T20 players in the world and coming off a monster season in last year’s Big Bash – if he’d played in the finals, the Sixers could well be reigning champions, such was the impact that he had.

I was pretty tempted to bring in Mujeeb Ur Rahman, but the Afghani is not expected to play for the Heat until the final six rounds of the competition, which means instead that I’ve plumped for his compatriot Zahir Khan. He’s another spinning sensation from the world’s emerging cricketing nation and, when coupled with the experience of Sixer Steve O’Keefe, gives my bowling ranks a point of difference.

It’s hard not to look past the Scorcher’s Chris Green, who is available at base level price and who might not necessarily impact with the ball, but could do so with the bat – he’s basically a free hit as a bench option here. The Renegades’ Will Sutherland was unfortunate to be injured last summer, but his season this year should be a big opportunity for him to stake a claim as a cricketer to watch.
