BBL10: Melbourne Renegades bowled out for 60 by Sydney Sixers

Melbourne Renegades narrowly avoided matching their own record for the BBL’s lowest-ever total in a disastrous batting display against Sydney Sixers.

Sydney Sixers romped to the biggest win in BBL history.

Defending champions Sydney have put the competition on notice, showing their fangs in record-breaking style by destroying a woeful Melbourne Renegades.

Led by a masterful 95 from Josh Philippe and a Ben Dwarshuis spell of 4-13, the BBL record 145-run victory — eclipsing the previous record of 112 — sent a message heard throughout the BBL hub.

Philippe scored the highest knock by a Sixer in 10 years of BBL, dispatching the ball to all parts, including two huge sixes that disappeared down the races.

He was dropped on a regulation caught and bowled by Beau Webster on just 24, with the score sitting at 2-42 in the seventh over.

Fast forward to the final over and he fell agonisingly short of the first Sixer ton in the competition’s history, but alongside Jordan Silk (45 not out) and Daniel Hughes (32) set a monster score of 4-205 for the men in magenta.

The Renegades lost three wickets in the power play and their hopes were effectively snuffed out when in-form Shaun Marsh was bowled by Steve O’Keefe (3-16) for 13 to end the seventh over 5-38 needing almost 13 an over to win.

The collapse became comical with wickets falling faster than the Hobart temperature. Peter Hatzoglou’s exit summed up the night when he inside edged O’Keefe on to his pads and then the stumps to make it five wickets in 10 balls as the red side was bowled out for 60 in the 11th over.

The Renegades only avoided the lowest score in BBL history — an infamous record they hold — by three runs.

SILK SENT IN

Eyebrows were raised when Jordan Silk was sent out during the Sydney power surge with big hitters Dan Christian and Carlos Brathwaite still on the bench — but boy did he put on a show.

Silk blasted his way to 45* (19), including whacking five fours, all through the off-side, from one Kane Richardson over.

But the highlight was launching Josh Lalor for a massive six that smashed on to the top of the Ricky Ponting Stand like a huge cymbal.

Known for the best hands in the business, Silk added another classic catch to his highlight reel to remove Benny Howell.

FIRST-BALL SPECIALIST

Fresh off his brilliant debut against the Scorchers, Hatzoglou found himself bowling the second over of the game. Going with the hot-hand paid off, as he removed Jack Edwards first ball when he swung and missed and was struck in front.

To back up, Hatzoglou took the ball for the first over of the power surge and removed Daniel Hughes caught at backward point by Kane Richardson.

It wasn’t all plain sailing for the youngster though, with his four overs going for 40 runs.

A DAY IS A LONG TIME IN BBL

Twenty-four hours after they rolled Perth for 130, the Renegades bowling unit came back to earth with a thud, dispatched to all corners of Blundstone Arena for the Sixers’ record score at the venue.

Player of the match just the night before, Josh Lalor received the most tap, going for 1-49.

Finch had boasted of the versatility of his bowling stocks but had nowhere to turn last night as all six bowlers used went for at least 9.75 an over.
