Hard-hitting batsman Ben McDermott is returning home to Queensland after eight seasons with the Tasmanian Tigers.

McDermott, 28, has signed a three-year deal with the Bulls, where he made his first-class and one-day debuts in the 2014-2015 season before departing for the Apple Isle.

“We’re very happy Ben has chosen to come back to Queensland and look forward to him joining with the coaching staff and rest of the Bulls squad once pre-season gets underway,’’ Queensland Cricket general manager of high performance Bennett King said.

“We’re very keen to work with Ben to help him realise his playing goals and no doubt his experience and skills will be welcomed by the playing group.

“He’s a seasoned player who has performed in all formats for Tasmania and Australia, and so it will be exciting to see him progress in the future.”

Despite his return home, the Australian one-day and T20 international representative will still play for the Hobart Hurricanes in the BBL.

McDermott, the son of Australian fast-bowling great Craig McDermott, played 49 first-class games for Tasmania, scoring a century and 18 half-centuries.

He also featured in 32 one-day games for the Tigers, with his 1374 runs at an average 45.80 including four centuries and nine half-centuries.

Cricket Tasmania thanked McDermott for his “outstanding service” to the Tigers.

“Cricket Tasmania is thrilled that Ben gets the opportunity to continue his cricket while himself and his young family are located closer to the immediate support of their family and loved ones,” a CT statement said.

“We wish Ben, Mandy and Sadie all the best in the next phase of their lives, and look forward to welcoming them all back to Tasmania ahead of BBL13.”
