Australia v India, first Test: Tim Paine reveals plan for Cameron Green

His workload will be closely monitored but don’t expect Cameron Green to be ‘restricted to four-over spells’ on his Test debut against India in Adelaide.

Tim Paine believes boom all-rounder Cameron Green will extend the careers of Australia’s pace attack, but an early career “handle with care’’ warning from his greatest supporter remains a sobering reality check.

The 200cm all-rounder will become the tallest top six batsman in Australian Test history when he makes his Test debut against India, but his lively pace bowling is also seen as a precious asset.

Green, who has broken down several times with stress fractures, has been bowling under workload restrictions and captains of teams he plays for have often felt acute desire to bowl him more, such is his pace and penetration.

Australia will attempt to walk the tightrope of maximising his bowling impact while keeping him away from the red-zone first flagged when he was breaking through by Test great Greg Chappell, who drew the cricket world’s attention to Green’s outstanding promise.

Chappell said his greatest fear was that everyone would become so excited by Green’s bowling that he could become over-bowled and break down again.

When asked whether Green might bowl four over spells in the Test, Paine replied: “I think he’ll bowl a few more overs than that.

“Once you’re selected in a Test match you’re good to go. Having said that we don’t expect him to bowl a huge amount of overs anyway. with the attack we’ve got we see him as just a nice change up.

“He takes 12-14 overs an innings out of our key fast bowlers, which is great. If Greeny can continue going the path he is, I think having him in the side allows us to have Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood around the Australian Test team for even longer in terms of their careers.

“He’s going to be a huge asset for us in that sense, we’ll wait and see how many overs he’ll bowl. We’ll know when he does bowl he’ll make an impact. That’s what we’ve seen from him, that’s what we expect him to do again.’’

Paine believes Green’s game is tailor-made for Test cricket.

“I’ve played against him and seen him score hundreds against Tasmania before,” he said.

“To be out there with him and talking with him he’s really impressive for a guy his age, understands his game really well.

“He’s got a really smart cricket brain for such a young guy and really calm and cool under pressure.

“From what I’ve seen of him playing against him and the last couple of weeks being around him, he’s made for Test cricket and we can’t wait to see him get out there tomorrow and unleash him.’’
