Ashes 2023: Pat Cummins silences Ollie Robinson after star quick’s cocky comments over Australia’s tailend

Ollie Robinson is wiping egg off his face this morning after Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon beautifully silenced his dismissive comments.

Captain Pat & The GOAT pull off heist in Birmingham

Pat Cummins had a beer in his hand minutes after smoking the winning runs off Ollie Robinson, and boy had he earned it.

Speculation over the Aussie skipper’s captaincy has plagued his career in the top job, with commentators earlier in the Test questioning whether he was calling the shots in the field.

But when the time came, chips down at the 11th hour, Cummins let his bat do the talking as he steered Australia through one of the most tense final sessions of his career.

Cummins and Nathan Lyon combined for a 55-run partnership when all seemed lost to grab victory from the jaws of defeat.

“That’s special. Bloody special. I’m lost for words,” Lyon said at the close of play.

Cummins’ stand with Australia’s tail was made all the more sweet considering Robinson’s comments a day earlier. Amid his media storm involving a fiery outburst at Usman Khawaja, Robinson took it upon himself to ridicule Australia’s lower order, declaring they had “brought three No. 11’s” over for the series.

Nightwatchman Scott Boland also played a crucial cameo, managing to see off the first seven overs of the morning before edging a short ball from Stuart Broad.

Australia claimed victory by two wickets and will go 1-0 into the second Test at Lord’s next week.

Cummins heaped praise on Lyon at the close of play and also congratulated Khawaja on a mammoth Test match, compiling 206 runs in a classy display of batting.

“Huge all week, we’ve been outnumbered but stuck in there. It’s been great,” Cummins said.

“The wicket didn‘t have too many demons in it. I thought it was well within our grasp. Both teams spoke about their styles and that’s the beauty of the series. We’ll both play to our strengths. I don’t know which is better but makes for good entertainment.

“Usman had incredible composure, he played his own method didn’t get caught up. He’s been class the last couple of years, to have someone like that in the middle for others to play around. I’m really happy for him. He had a good feel for the wicket, everyone else tried to play their little role.

“Nathan Lyon was huge, both innings. He’s played 120 Tests, he takes key wickets, he’s a superstar. He’s calm, he goes about his work.”

Tensions almost exploded throughout the day’s play, with footage of Robinson being dragged away from Usman Khawaja by teammate Jimmy Anderson emerging from the first drinks break.

Robinson, who became an instant Ashes villain when he gave Khawaja a brutal send-off in the first innings, appeared to be at it again.

Khawaja appeared to be saying something in the direction of the England team when Robinson marched over.

But he was quickly pulled back by Anderson.

“No love lost at all between Ollie Robinson and Usman Khawaja,” former England captain Nasser Hussain said in commentary.

Former Aussie wicketkeeper Brad Haddin said it was “mayhem” in the Baggy Green camp as the tourists celebrated what Khawaja described as the best win of this career.

“This is Test number one and it’s mayhem, it’s like they’ve won the series,” Haddin said after day five.

Robinson’s Khawaja sledge ignites Ashes series

Robinson had mouths wagging in Australia after refusing to apologise for yelling “f*** off, you f***ing pr**k” directly at Khawaja after dismissing him for 141 in the first innings.

In a post match interview on Monday, the Pommy paceman blamed his actions on the heat of the contest and said his sledge wasn’t anything out of line, considering what England has been through in the past.

He referenced Ponting for doing similar to English batters in Ashes series gone by, prompting a swift response from the former Aussie skipper.

Ponting said Robinson was openly sledging Australia’s “nicest” player and warned him that some English players’ true colours could be exposed over the course of the five-Test clash.

Ponting gave Robinson a partial pass due to the context of the game at the time. He was struggling for a wicket, and Khawaja was the man to get.

“A lot of this stuff happens in the heat of battle. The only thing I‘d say with Ollie yesterday is Khawaja was on 140, Robinson hadn’t looked like getting a wicket all day, and he’s just sledged probably the nicest man that’s ever walked on the planet,” Ponting told Sky Sports in Birmingham.
