LOGAN singer Dami Im’s change in musical direction is already paying dividends.
As well as taking part in the Queen’s Baton Relay in her home suburb en route to the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, Im yesterday was also celebrating the stellar debut of her new album, I Hear A Song, on this week’s ARIA charts.
The jazz-inspired album, which Im had worked on for more than a year, debuted at No. 3 on the albums chart yesterday – the best of any Australian artist – and No. 1 on the jazz and blues chart.
She was beaten only by Ed Sheeran’s record-breaking album Divide and The Greatest Showman soundtrack.
Admitting the album was the first time she had set her own agenda in the music world, Im said she felt more exposed releasing this music.
“When you’re being so authentic to yourself and people don’t like it, there’s more risk involved because it’s more personal,” she said.
“You’re going to get judged on it, and that can be a terrifying thought.
“Everyone has an opinion about it, which can be stressful, but I think I’m learning to accept that, whether it’s negative or positive, and just stick with what I stand for.”
Im is rumoured to be among those who will perform at Wednesday’s Commonwealth Games opening ceremony. She will also perform a special concert at The Star Gold Coast on Thursday.
