FOR hockey star Jake Whetton, a home Commonwealth Games year is already one to remember.
The day before the Kookaburras travelled to the Gold Coast last Wednesday, the 26-year-old from Brisbane let them know he and wife Sam were expecting their first child in October.
“We were excited to let everyone know before the Games started,” Whetton told Confidential. “Happy is an understatement.”
Whetton, who now lives in Perth, said it was the perfect scenario to be able to share the news as he returned to Queensland, where he could celebrate with family and friends.
“It’s the first time I get to play in front of a home crowd,” he said. “(Sam) is coming over next Friday before our first game on Saturday.”
This will be the second Commonwealth Games for Whetton, who also competed at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
While the couple were yet to find out the baby’s gender, if the photo they shared of a hockey stick in a bassinet is anything to go by, an Australian star could be in the making.
