Hattrick hero Thomas Vaseo has been included in arguably our best balanced Team of the Week so far this season.

Following a bumper round 6 of AIC First XI cricket which saw Iona College close in on the premiership, St Laurence’s fast bowler Vaseo was named after taking a hattrick across two overs?

Vaseo is playing up in his age group after coming off an eye-catching club season with his club side Redlands.

Also centre stage and receiving an encore was Iona’s Marley Malpass who, after a dazzling 109 not out, also claimed two wickets with his medium pace.

ROUND 6 REPORT - HOW IT ALL UNFOLDED

Malpass is one of four all-rounders - Cameron Plackett (Padua), Xavier Santos (St Laurence’s) and Aiden Mohr (St Laurence’s) - in this beautifully balanced Team of the Week.

The team also features a new chum - rookie Laurie’s paceman Vaseo - two St Peters batsman - Johnson and Nelson - and a top order batsman (Nickelson, Ashgrove) who is also the gloveman.

Team of the Week

1. William Nickelson (Ashgrove)

Ashgrove’s No. 1 batsman and keeper was again the opposition bowler’s No. 1 target but despite this he still managed a 60.

2. James Nelson (St Peters)

Nelson dug deep to etch out a gutsy half century which gave his side every chance of victory.

3. Harley Malpass (Iona)

Stand and applaud this young man who blasted his second century in as many matches. Not only that, he consistently takes wickets with his medium pace.

4. Finn Thallon (Villanova)

Thallon’s thunderous 88 took the match up to unbeaten Iona College and no one would have begrudged him a century if he had got there.

5. Xavier Santos (St Laurence’s)

With three wickets and 35, Santos was again Mr Everything to the St Laurence’s in a sweet win over arch rivals Marist College Ashgrove.

6. Cameron Plackett (Padua)

Plackett has made our team before as a batsman, and today he nailed down No. 6 because of both his left arm pace bowling and his batting.

7. Noah Johnson (St Peters)

Together with James Nelson who we mentioned earlier, Johnson’s half century proved the difference in a narrow win.

8. Aiden Mohr (St Laurence’s)

Mohr has been constantly in the game with the ball or the bat, and he rose to the occasion again last weekend in both departments.

9. Lachlan McClure (Iona)

Iona’s spiritual leader of the attack showed his troops how it was done. It was a great team bowling effort, with McClure outstanding.

10. Alexander Bullock (St Patrick’s)

St Patrick’s enjoyed an eight wicket win off the back of Bullock’s four wicket bowling effort. He is an effort bowler who richly deserved his rewards at the weekend.

St Laurence's bowler Thomas Vaseo took three wickets in three balls across two overs at the weekend.

11. Thomas Vaseo (St Laurence’s College)

Vaseo will finish the season as one of several discovery players, with the bustling young fast bowler set to torment rivals again in 2025.

12. Henry Ainsworth (Padua College)

Ainsworth’s 61 not out gave his side every chance of victory in a desperately close match won by St Peters.

Special mentions:Evan Chamberlin and Lachlan Wigan (both St Laurence’s)

Chamberlin struck with two wickets while leg spinner Wigan tied the Ashgrove batsmen down, building pressure for his fellow bowlers.

Joey Laner, bowling for Ashgrove, has had another good summer.

The boys took six wickets between them, with Easter dismissing the dangerous Aiden Mohr while also being involved in a run out.

Adam Hogan (St Patrick’s)

The young finger spinner broke St Edmund’s annoying opening partnership when he dismissed Ryder Rundell (21), and went on to take 3-8.

Will Webster (Padua)

He scored runs - 36 - and a wicket again in another fine performance in the field and with the bat. Well done again to Will Webster.
