Media reports on Tuesday night indicated the government had considered cancelling the global event amid a public backlash over venue costs and waning public support.

But Premier Steven Miles’s office has denied that any serious consideration was given – saying the government was committed to the event.
“The government has never sought advice about cancelling the Games,” a spokeswoman said.
“We’ve always said Queensland would deliver a great games – not once did the government ever have the intention to cancel the games.
“We have decided not to spend $3.4 billion on a new stadium.”
When Victoria pulled out of hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2026, the state paid $380m in compensation.
