LNP refuses to reveal position on Olympic venues after Quirk review

Queensland’s alternative government has remained silent on whether it supports the premier’s $1.6bn Olympic stadiums plan, but instead pledged to go back to the drawing board if elected in October.

Steven Miles on why he won't build a new Olympic stadium

Queensland’s alternative government has remained silent on whether it supports Premier Steven Miles’s $1.6bn Olympic stadiums plan, but instead pledged to go back to the drawing board if elected in October.

Opposition Leader David Crisafulli did not face questions following Premier Steven Miles’s bombshell decision to ignore the key recommendation in Graham Quirk’s review.

Instead, Deputy Leader Jarrod Bleijie fronted the media to also refuse to reveal the LNP’s position on where the Games should be held.

“What I support is an independent Infrastructure Delivery Authority making those decisions,” he said.

Mr Bleijie labelled the Miles government’s costings and Olympic infrastructure plan untrustworthy and said, if elected in October, the LNP would outsource decision-making to an agency.

“What we’ll absolutely be doing … is telling the independent Infrastructure Delivery Authority that these are your decisions,” he said.

“We are going to have a world class 2032 Olympics if the LNP is successful in October, we will have an Olympic and Paralympic Games that will be the envy of any Olympic and Paralympic Games around the world.

“We’re going to make sure Queenslanders have confidence in the process that we have not seen under the Labor government.”

Mr Bleijie denied returning to the drawing board would add significantly longer delays, despite the independent authority being unlikely to have a new Games’ plan before the end of the year.

“We’ve had a 1000 days of waste by the Labor government, we are only a few months off from an election campaign starting,” he said.
