Brisbane 2032: Readers call for Victoria Park stadium to go ahead

Brisbane Olympics 2032
Don't miss out on the headlines from Brisbane Olympics 2032. Followed categories will be added to My News.
Queenslanders are overwhelmingly calling for the Crisafulli Government to lock in Victoria Park as the location for the main stadium of the Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Plans for a $2.6bn 60,000-seat stadium that would be built as part of a bigger Games precinct at the inner-city site have long been the top choice among readers, and recent developments during the Government’s 100-day review into viable options have only strengthened that opinion.
See what readers had to say below and join the conversation >>>
The former Labor government’s controversial preference, a temporary stadium at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre facility in Nathan, has long been derided by the LNP, while a bold private bid for a spectacular stadium at Northshore in Hamilton has slowly slipped further out of the conversation after being shut down by the previous government.
Now, the only other option on the table prior to the conclusion of the 100-day review, a rebuild of the Gabba, has sensationally been knocked back by Cricket Australia, which would have used the venue for Test matches and other internationals.
It means support for the Victorial Park plan is stronger than ever, and a poll that has so far received more than 35,900 reader votes backs that up, putting it as the clear favourite, with 73 per cent of the vote, while the Gabba rebuild gains just 15 per cent.
The bold privately funded Northshore proposal was popular with just 2 per cent of readers, while QSAC, got 10 per cent backing.
Here’s what else readers had to say about the stadiums in contention for Brisbane 2032:

Victoria Park a no brainer
Keith
It will re-vitalise the city centre as has been the case in Perth and Adelaide. No brainer, just build it.
Leigh
No brainer...it doesnt need a 100 day review...1 day ...Victoria Park.
Alfi
Brisbanes mentality on sport is still stuck in the 80’s. The economic impact a world class stadium brings in unparalleled
Mark
The need for a new 75k+ seat stadium has never been greater with the Gabba falling apart, Qld missing out on big events and the Olympics coming.
David
Yep. Time to get real and build a proper new stadium
Ian
The Gabba will be the sixth test venue in Australia once Stadium Tasmania is built. Time to face facts and build a new stadium for AFL, cricket and the Olympics.
Henry Root
A bigger stadium is needed with population growth so vic park or hamilton is needed for big events and sports. the gabba can be refurbed as the hq for events that only need a smaller stadium but big field.
Spectre
This is the biggest No-Brainer in Australian sport at the moment. The GABBA needs to be demolished and replaced with a 75,000 seat stadium, that has a retractable roof. Then bring on the Olympics. In winter, obviously, the Lions, but State of Origin third game decider. Broncos for a few games. Carlton Collingwood playing for real during the season. A boxing match. NFL. ….. This is a No Brainer, BNE QLD.
@Aus
Victoria Park is a no brainer. Sell the land that the Gabba sits and there’s the downpayment….and some.
Jacky
On top of everything else Vic Park wins HANDS UP for transport and accessibility. Its also close to the CBD/Southbank for all those who want to use it for accommodation.
Peter
Once again it’s a win for Vic Park.
Start building it already.
Wayne
Brisbane must have a brand new 70,000 seat stadium at Vic park plus new entertainment centre at Roma St plus renovate RNA & Gabba Sell boondall to help pay for this Otherwise Qld will remain an international embarrassment with all stadiums outdated and 20-40 years old and attract zero major events
Roger
Vic Park for mine. Gabba to be redeveloped as housing.
Keith
Just build a world class facility at Vic Park. Look at Adelaide and Perth and what a CBD based stadium has done for those cities. Pay for it out with 3 months coal royalties.
Nicholas
Demolish the gabba, build at Victoria Park and sell the gabba land to developers. That pays for most, if not all of the building costs.
Gabba won’t work
Western Rod
When you look at that photo of the gabba where the stands are built over the street it is obvious that the area is not big enough for a larger stadium
Charlie
Great news for both cricket and AFL. The Gabba is becoming an embarrassment for Brisbane!
Vortigern
OK. I lived for a few years between the Gabba and the Pineapple Hotel in the 1970s. Doesn’t anybody realise that the current stadium is already too big for the site? The stadium hangs over Stanley Street and I believe that an air tax has to be paid. The 9nly way to augment this site is to build so high that spectators would be barely able to see the running track.
QSAC makes no sense
Wayne
QSAC the dumbest decision ever - no transport, middle of nowhere, c grade facilities - embarrassing Qld must have a new 80,000 seat stadium for 2032 - Lang park, Gabba, QSAC and Boondall all 20 year old+ and all outdated with c grade facilities- every progressive city has all stadiums close to the city with public transport options
LFC
QSAC makes no sense in anybody’s head except Steven Miles who has been playing politics the whole time.
Private funding divides
Frank
What about the privately funded Hamilton proposal? Now that I could back.
Lisa
Putting the Northshore option at $6B in the survey is outrageous.
Fix what we already have
Brian
Gabba - leave Victoria Park as green space - all the high density in area - just bloody start the Gabba yesterday!
Neil
Upgrade the three stadiums we currently have, then your Olympics should make a profit, no point going deeper into debt.
Mick
Just rebuild the Gabba and be done with it. The transport options are already in place. Enough with wasting money on a massive stadium for 2 weeks of sport that will never be filled by either AFL or cricket.
Jean-Marc
Just rebuild the Gabba with 80000 capacity on a raised field with carpark and services under it, so then will be flood free and easily accessible by all people.
Dave
No, cricket should stay at the Gabba. We don’t want it turning out like the WACA in Western Australia
