The transformation of Queensland’s largest waterfront renewal project and 2032 Olympic and Paralympic athlete village has been accelerated.
A development scheme amendment to the Northshore Hamilton development area was approved by Deputy Premier and Planning Minister Steven Miles, unlocking a 1.2km stretch of waterfront land to house more than 24,000 residents.
The more than 300 hectares will feature a mix of retail, residential, and commercial properties, as well as progressing the precinct to host 10,000 athletes for Brisbane 2032.
“It will be one of the biggest contributions of Brisbane riverfront parkland since South Bank was established,” Mr Miles said.
“This development will cement Northshore as a world-class lifestyle, recreation and events destination.
“These changes also provide for the future planning of the athlete village for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games – and the long-term economic and community benefits to follow.
“This city-shaping project presents an incredible opportunity to showcase Brisbane’s iconic waterfront to the world and deliver a long-lasting legacy for the state.”
More than 14,000 dwellings will supply much-needed residential supply amid the state’s housing crisis and rapidly growing population, according to Mr Miles.
“Following the Games, the athlete village will convert to housing and commercial property, providing more than 1750 apartments, along with commercial and retail space,” the Deputy Premier said.
Northshore Hamilton was identified by the planning department as a priority development area, which are parcels of land to respond to community needs and population growth.
The amendment to the development scheme, to take effect from Friday, is the regulatory step needed to move ahead with planning and developing the precinct.
