The Gabba redevelopment for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games will exceed the $1bn price tag, Acting Premier Steven Miles has confirmed.
But the state government is remaining tight-lipped about exactly how much more taxpayers will fork out for the massive stadium revamp.
Mr Miles on Tuesday confirmed the cost would be “larger than was originally anticipated”, but said more details would be released once funding arrangements were finalised with the Commonwealth.
“As everyone would be aware, building costs have increased substantially since the original bid,” he said.
“We will outline exactly how much more once we’ve finalised the plan and the funding agreement.”
Mr Miles would not be drawn on how much more the price tag would reach amid repeated questions about the increase, saying: “We will get to that detail at the appropriate time”.
The Acting Premier – who is in charge of overseeing infrastructure for the Games – last week blamed funding negotiations with the Commonwealth for the lack of public plans for the redevelopment.
On Tuesday, Mr Miles said conversations between the State and Commonwealth over funding arrangements for the redevelopment – which was initially meant to cost $1bn – were still underway.
“We are very committed to redeveloping the Gabba to be our Olympics stadium,” he said.
“The Gabba is due for a redevelopment anyway. It is of course home to cricket and the AFL here and we want to continue to attract those and other events to our state.
“We’re working on finalising those plans along with the Australian government and looking forward to getting that project underway.”
