The $2.5bn Brisbane Arena to be used for swimming and water polo during the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be built over the new Roma St Station Deputy Premier Steven Miles has said, with engineers working on what train disruptions that could cause.
And the 17,000-seat project, with construction to start in 2027 and end in 2030 won’t impact the amount of green space available at the adjacent Roma St Parklands.
Mr Miles on Saturday confirmed the Brisbane Arena would be built over Roma St Station, with engineers “working on” the details of what disruptions that might cause.
It comes after the federal and state government officially inked a $7bn Games infrastructure deal on Friday.
Under the funding deal the federal government will fund the $2.5bn Brisbane Arena while the state government will go it alone on the $2.7bn expanded rebuild of the Gabba, with construction to begin in 2026 and be done by 2030.
At nearby Raymond Park, where the government has proposed building an Olympics athletics warm up facility, Mr Miles confirmed about six homes would have to be resumed.
“Our intention at Raymond Park is to return it to at least its current size after the Olympics,” he said.
“There may be small impacts on residential properties, we’re talking less than half a dozen.
“We have been in constant contact with those landholders it’s not unusual for major government projects to have some impact on land holdings.”
The other $1.87bn of the Games funding packet, split between the two levels of government, will go toward upgrading nine existing venues and constructing five new sites.
As part of the demolition and rebuild of the Gabba, the state government has also decided to expand Woolloongabba’s Priority Development Area out to South Bank as part of a major revitalisation.
It includes plans for a pedestrian bridge from the Gabba down Stanley Street to South Bank, and connected to the Goodwill Bridge across to Riverstage.
The pathways will extend all the way to existing links connecting Milton’s Suncorp Stadium, and across to the Brisbane Arena site.
