Tim Tszyu’s date with boxing destiny is here.

The undefeated Australian boxing star faces the toughest test of his career when he takes on American Tony Harrison for the interim WBO super welterweight title on Sunday.

Tszyu hasn’t fought since he defeated Terrell Gausha in Minneapolis in March last year and he’s itching to get back in the ring after an extended training camp in the US and back home in Sydney.

The 28-year-old was set to fight unified super welterweight champion Jermell Charlo in Las Vegas in January but a hand injury to Charlo meant that fight was postponed.

There’s plenty at stake on Sunday for both Tszyu (21-0) and Harrison, (29-3-1) with the winner all but certain to get first crack at Charlo later this year.

If he wins, Tszyu will become Australia’s sixth current boxing world champion, albeit an interim one, and replicate his famous father, Kostya Tszyu, by becoming world champion.

“It’s going to be big” Tim told news.com.au.

“This is going to be the biggest father and son duo that’s ever competed in combat sports. It’s going to be an honour to represent my family and my ancestry.”

If Tszyu loses, it will be a brutal reality check and the risk of staying active could blow up in his face when he could have waited for the Charlo fight that was already locked in.

News Corp’s Paul Kent believes Tszyu is taking a huge risk just by taking this fight against Harrison, who is the only man to have beaten Charlo.

“It’s a risky fight for him,” Kent told news.com.au.

“If I was handling Tim, I wouldn’t be very happy about taking. He should be able to out-box Harrison. I think he’ll be too clever for him.

“The concern is that he already had the fight with Charlo contracted. He didn’t need to take the fight and risk potentially losing the fight.

“That said, if he comes through the fight with a good win, it really helps him giong into the Charlo fight. It’s going to really sharpen him up for that.

“It’s a lot of risk and a lot of reward each way. But I commend him for taking it because it’s a brave decision.”

Also appearing on a stacked fight card is Tim’s younger brother Nikita Tszyu, as well as Sam Goodman and Paulo Aokuso.

Tszyu vs Harrison will take place at Sydney’s Qudos Arena, where a capacity crowd of 20,000 is expected.

When is the fight?

The fight will take place on the afternoon of Sunday 12 March.

Coverage of the fight card begins at 12pm (AEDT), so Tszyu and Harrison can be expected to enter the ring from around 3pm (AEDT), although timing isn’t an exact science in boxing.
