ANTHONY Mundine has cried foul over Jeff Horn’s rough fighting style but Brisbane’s former world champ showed he has even more tricks in store for him by using another kind of fowl in preparation for their big fight at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night.
Horn’s unusual training move showcased all the speed and movement Horn plans to use against “Choc’’ Mundine in the River City Rumble as he chased a prize chicken before his 12-round training session at his Stretton gym.
Horn is confident he will be the top rooster in Australian boxing after Friday night and is planning a dramatic stoppage of Mundine, who has been the sport’s biggest drawcard in this country for 18 years.
The chicken – a Silver Spangled Hamburg – was provided by Horn’s Dutch-born grandfather Jack Dykstra, 82, who has been breeding prize fowl for 50 years.
Horn took a leaf out of the movie Rocky II in chasing the chicken as part of his big fight preparation.
“Today I cornered a chook,’’ Horn said. “On Friday I’ll corner Choc.’’
Mundine made headlines two weeks ago when he claimed he was chasing emus as part of his fight preparation but Horn showed he had plenty to crow about too, as he swerved one way and then the other to stop the chicken in its tracks.
Mundine says Horn’s only hope in the fight is to use foul tactics – headbutts and elbows – and he has sought an urgent meeting with Gold Coast referee Phil Austin to alert him to Horn’s rough style of fighting.
Horn’s trainer Glenn Rushton said his boxer’s chicken dance yesterday would cause Mundine “great consternation knowing we have sourced the absolute best when it comes to exploiting fowl play and we will not be outdone in any department.’’
