George Kambosos set for a comeback title fight in the nation where ‘Ferocious’ shocked the boxing world

George Kambosos became a world champion in America with a shock win in 2021. Now ‘Ferocious’ is returning to the Land of Opportunity for an IBO world-title showdown.

George Kambosos became a world champion in the Land of Opportunity.

Now ‘Ferocious’ Kambosos is going back to America in his quest to reclaim the world-title belts he lost to Devin Haney.

News Corp can reveal Kambosos’ IBO world-title fight against England’s Maxi Hughes has been moved from Australia to the US, with the duo to square off on Saturday, July 29 in Las Vegas.

It is understood a formal announcement will be made this week, with the Kambosos-Hughes IBO world-title showdown to be the main event of a Top Rank promotion that will also feature Australian heavyweight Joe Goodall.

Kambosos was originally slated to fight Hughes in his hometown Sydney in June, but broadcast negotiations will see the IBO world-title ‘Ashes’ battle moved to Vegas.

Kambosos shocked the world with his multi-belt boilover of Teofimo Lopez in New York in November 2021 and the 29-year-old is relishing the prospect of returning to America in the hunt for more titles.

Ferocious (20-2, 10KO) is on the comeback trail after consecutive losses to Haney last year and said he is hellbent on hammering Hughes (26-5-2, 5KO) to re-emerge as a serious contender in the red-hot lightweight division.

“I will stop him,” Kambosos said.

“I‘m not just going to beat him, I will knock him out or seriously put a beating on this guy.

“He is a crafty veteran, so I won‘t take him lightly.

“It’s a huge opportunity for him, too, so I know how he will look at it, but I’m considering victory and nothing else.

“I’m not even worried about another loss. I am levels above Maxi Hughes. There is nothing he can do that I didn’t see against Devin Haney, let alone the 22 fights I’ve had in my career.

“I will win the fight and Ferocious will be back.”

While the IBO is not one of the Big Four organisations, the Kambosos-Hughes bout will also double as a possible world-title eliminator for the vacant No. 2 ranking with the IBF.

“When I win this fight, I’m back in line for the IBF world title,” said Kambosos, who is No. 7 with the IBF, one ranking above Hughes.

“I’m a big-name fighter and I still deserve the biggest fighters.

“This is a great step-back fight, then I will do the business and go after the biggest fights again.

“I am a worldwide name in boxing. I’m only 29, so I’m far from finished.”

Meanwhile, classy Queenslander Jalen Tait won the Australian lightweight title, once held by Kambosos, in Brisbane on Friday night.

The 21-year-old from Townsville (12-0, 7KO) won a unanimous points decision over a brave Kye MacKenzie (21-5, 17KO) to claim the national belt vacated by Harry Garside, who rejected a fight with Tait.
