Tim Tszyu’s promoter says Jermell Charlo has “had his chance” as the undefeated Aussie prepares to chase “superfights” against the biggest names in world boxing.

Tszyu takes on Brian Mendoza on the Gold Coast on Sunday, and is heavily favoured to beat the American, who has scored upset wins by knockout in his last two fights.

The fight is expected to be Tszyu’s last on Australian soil for some time as he turns his attention to some of most revered boxers on the planet.

Plans to fight Jermell Charlo in a fight to become the unified super welterweight champion were scrapped when the trash talking American pulled out on several occasions.

It dented Tszyu’s dream of winning all the belts in a single fight, which is becoming increasingly rare in the fragmented and political boxing landscape.

And while Tszyu would still like to beat Charlo one day, his promoter says they won’t be waiting around for him any more — instead targeting even bigger names.

“Brian Mendoza. Errol Spence. Terrence Crawford. Canelo Alvarez. That’s what’s next for Tim Tszyu,” No Limit Boxing’s George Rose said.

“Tim’s got a real dangerous challenge on his hands in Mendoza. He’s easily the top of the division alongside Tim and his knockout power is vicious.

“If Tim can get through his toughest test to date in Mendoza on Sunday then it’s only the biggest and best fights for him after that.

“There are no bigger fights in boxing than taking down not one, but the two top pound-for-pound fighters in the world in back-to-back fights.”

Crawford defeated Spence in July to become the undisputed welterweight champion, while Alvarez outclassed Charlo earlier this month in their super middleweight fight to retain his status as the king of global boxing.

Alvarez has won world titles at light middleweight (also known as super welterweight), middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight.

Rose said if he beats Mendoza this weekend, Team Tszyu is looking beyond Charlo for fights against Spence, Crawford and Alvarez.

“Charlo had his chance and he ran,” Rose said.

“He literally ran. He ran from fighting Tim for the undisputed title and then he ran around the ring all the way to the bank against Canelo.

“Tim is the most active fighter in the world right now and isn’t going to sit around and wait for Charlo to decide if and when he’s going to come back to the division.

“Of course we want him to become the undisputed champion of the world, but when the guy who has the other belts has one fight every one to two years, it’s not good business.”

Tszyu has completed several pre-fight training camps in Las Vegas and the lure of the bright lights of America is proving strong.

Speaking on the Hello Sport podcast, Tszyu said he would welcome a fight against Crawford “hopefully in the future”.

“He’d have to come up,” Tszyu said.

“I don’t have long left in this division (super welterweight). I’m trying to get as many big fights. Hopefully we can get the Charlo fight sorted one day and then I’ll move up.”

Asked what his goals for the rest of his boxing career, Tszyu said: “Just make super fights. “Make fights where you can wake up and tell a story in the future — the stories, the highlights.

“Belts are great. They’re little trophies that you can put on the wall but the highlights and the fights you go through. The videos that are going to be played over and over again, that’s what I’m fighting for.”

Tszyu spoke openly about wanting to “move up” divisions soon, revealing he doesn’t want to continue doing strenuous weight cuts to make super welterweight for too much longer.

“You weigh in at 69.8, which is my weight limit,” he explaining.

“Then let’s say a couple hours after, I’ll be 75kg. A couple hours after that I’ll be 78kg. That night I’ll be 80kg. So 10kg.

“Rehydration, food, everything. All the carbs just suck into your body. It’s crazy to see the difference. From the weigh in to 24 hours after, you’re a completely different person.

“You see by the face. Your face is complete sucked in. I’m not comfortable doing it all the time. I’m hoping to move up.

“I’ve set goals for myself in this weight division. Once I’m done and I’ve completed my task, then I’m going. I’m not sitting in the sauna for two hours, let’s just say that.”
