Boxing news: Tim Tszyu’s world title shot postponed after rival Jermell Charlo breaks his hand

Tim Tszyu’s shot at a world title is on ice after Jermell Charlo was forced to call off their Las Vegas bout. But the American’s chip is certain to keep the fires burning until it goes ahead.

Australian boxer Tim Tszyu will have to wait even longer for his shot at world title glory after his opponent Jermell Charlo suffered a broken hand in training forcing the postponement of their January 28 bout in Las Vegas.

Tszyu was already in United States preparing for his maiden shot at a world title when word came through his fight would need to be rescheduled after an injury sustained by Charlo in training.

“I was sparring, and I threw this nice punch and as soon as it landed, I knew something was wrong. I felt my hand throbbing right away,’” Charlo said.

“I had two X-rays and an MRI to see what was wrong. It showed it was broken in two places. I hate this feeling.

“My hand will be in a cast for two months. I’m as disappointed as the fans, maybe more, because this was my first chance to defend the undisputed title.”

Charlo had been training for this bout since July and claimed he was hitting harder than ever, even boasting he’d have still defeated Tszyu with one hand.

“The way I am I would have beaten Tszyu with one hand, but the doctors and the commission won’t allow that,” Charlo said.

“After my hand heals, I’m coming back stronger than ever to defend my legacy.”

Tszyu’s camp plan to keep the 28-year-old boxer in the US and schedule a fight in February to keep him on target for a shot at the world title when Charlo is fully recovered.
