It’s official. Australia has secured another world-title bout with Brisbane-based Irishman Dennis Hogan winning a $300,000 purse bid to take on IBO super welterweight champion Sam Eggington.

News Corp can reveal Hogan will attempt to finally conquer the world at his fourth attempt when he confronts ‘The Savage’ Eggington on October 8 at Newcastle Entertainment Centre — the scene of his loss to Tim Tszyu two years ago.

It will be Australia’s third world-title event this year after George Kambosos’ failed unification blockbuster against Devin Haney in June, a month before Jai Opetaia pulled off a stunning upset of cruiserweight king Mairis Briedis on the Gold Coast.

Now, after three heartbreaking world-title defeats, ‘Hurricane’ Hogan (30-4-1, 7KO) gets the chance to exorcise his big-fight demons against Englishman Eggington (32-7, 18KO) in his return to Newcastle.

Many boxing pundits believe Hogan was robbed in his majority-decision loss to Jaime Munguia (40-0) in 2019 – dubbed the Mexican Mugging – but the 37-year-old has a golden chance to win the IBO world title Down Under.

“We’re over the moon to be bringing another world title fight to Australia,” said Hogan’s manager Steve Scanlan.

“Dennis has fought for three world titles. He was robbed in Mexico in 2019 against Munguia, so this is the chance to make amends and finally get the world title that has eluded him.

“Dennis has suffered some heartbreaking losses in his career and this is probably his final chance to win a world title.

“We’re very confident he will win the world title on home soil _ it would be the crowning moment for Dennis’ career.”

Hogan was at the crossroads when he was soundly beaten by Tszyu in 2021, but back-to-back wins over Tommy Browne and Wade Ryan have put him back in the world-title frame.

While the IBO is not one of the Big Four organisations, some of their past world champions include Lennox Lewis, Roy Jones Jr, Floyd Mayweather Jr, Manny Pacquiao, Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua.

Newcastle has grim memories for Hogan, who was taken apart over five rounds by Tszyu, but Scanlan said the veteran pugilist is relishing the prospect of making amends against Eggington.

“When I mentioned the fight is in Newcastle, Dennis said, ‘This can’t get any better, I can erase my demons from my loss to Tim’,” Scanlan said.

“We were keen for the world-title to be in Brisbane in Dennis’ backyard, but Newcastle has a great history with Kostya Tszyu having fought there and it’s a place where Dennis can right some wrongs.

“Sam is a very good fighter and he always has entertaining fights, but everyone thinks they can beat Dennis until they get in there. He is a wily customer, he outsmarts a lot of rivals and his movement means he finds a way to win.

“The IBO has had some great champions, so winning a world title at age 37 would be a fitting reward for Dennis.

“No-one in boxing works harder than Dennis Hogan.”
