Boxer Luis Quinones has been confirmed dead following five days in a coma.

The fighter was rushed to hospital following a 140lb title bout against Jose Munoz in Barranquilla, Colombia.

Quinones underwent surgery for a clot in the brain in the early hours of Sunday.

And after five days in a coma, his death was confirmed on Thursday.

The Colombian Boxing Federation said: “Unfortunately he lost that battle, we express our sincere condolences to his entire family.

“Peace in his grave and resignation to the designs of God”.

A devastated Munoz spoke out following the tragic news of his opponent‘s passing.

He said: “I never thought that a dream could turn into a real nightmare.

“The desire to succeed in life put us both on the same path, but because of those things in life and especially the profession we chose, today you are in a situation that we never imagined.

“During the last days, your image does not stop in my head, and I think about the great future that lies ahead.

“We have been partners and friends of sparring which has allowed me to know all the good things you have to offer as a person and as an athlete.”

Quinones lost for the first time in 11 fights against Munoz, having made his debut in 2018.

Brother Leonardo also paid tribute, writing on Facebook: “Now you are in the arms of your heavenly, whom you adored and served.

“I love you my brother Luis Quinones, forever in our hearts.”

This marks the third death in the ring this year.

It follows the passing of Russian Arest Saakyan, 26, in January and South African Simiso Buthelezi, 24, in June.

There were also two boxing deaths in 2021, Mexican women Jeanette Zacarías Zapata, 18, and Rashed Al-Swaisat, 18, an amateur from Jordan.
