The Townsville Fire have secured the services of superb shot-blocker Lauren Cox for another season after the Texan import agreed to return for 2025/26.
The WNBL’s Defensive Player of the Year has been a revelation since joining Townsville for her first campaign in Australia, leading the league in blocks and establishing herself as one of the best bigs in the nation.
Fire coach Shannon Seebohm said he was thrilled to extend the former first round, third-overall WNBA draft pick’s time in North Queensland.
“We are absolutely delighted to have Lauren back with us for another season,” Seebohm said.
“She brings such a high level of skill and professionalism to our group, and her ability to impact the game at both ends of the floor makes her a key part of our team.
“We know she has another level to reach.”
This season Cox has averaged 13.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 2.9 blocks, acting as a driving force behind the Fire’s successful campaign.
The 26-year-old forward said it was an easy decision to commit to another season with the Fire.
“I feel like I’ve found a home away from home with the Townsville Fire,” Cox said.
“It’s one of the best organisations I’ve played for professionally and I’m super excited to be coming back for another season.”
It comes after Fire co-captain Courtney Woods signed a two-year extension in February to remain in Townsville until at least the end of the 2026/27 season.
The Fire begin their three-game grand final series for the WNBL championship on Wednesday night, taking on the Bendigo Spirit.
