Josh Giddey is set for a monster new contract with the Aussie’s late season surge for the Chicago Bulls tipped to pay off in a big way.
The 22-year-old was devastated to be traded from the Oklahoma City Thunder but has found his groove as Chicago’s lead playmaker following Zach Lavine’s departure at the trade deadline.

Giddey had four consecutive 20-point double-double games since the All-Star break as he makes the case for a pay rise in the summer when his rookie contract expires.
The point guard is averaging 13.8 points, 7.7 rebounds and 6.7 assists per game this season, but he has been hitting the scoreboard a lot more in the past month, averaging 23.1 points and 52.5 per cent from three-point range in his last nine games.
He recorded a triple double against Miami last week, the 14th triple double of his career and his first since December.
His salary this season is A$13.3 million, but that could skyrocket n the off-season if the Bulls re-sign him as they look to rebuild the franchise around a young core.
Veteran NBA reporter Brian Windhorst told ESPN he expects the Bulls to re-sign Giddey for a contract worth around USD $30 million (A$47 million) per season.
“This is the kind of play I thought he (Giddey) would have all year,” Windhorst said.
“His role was sort of limited. After the trades they’ve opened up his role (and) this is the player he can be.
“The going rate for a starting point guard in the NBA is around thirty million dollars. He is their starter.
“If you look at a guy like Immanuel Quickley, he got five years and $162 million (A$257 million) — that’s about $32 million a year. I’m sure Josh Giddey’s hoping for something like that.
“He’s not quite the scorer or defender Quickley is, so maybe slightly less.”

Giddey is a restricted free agent and if no other team pursues him, the Bulls could sign him to a one-year contract and make him play for a long term deal as an unrestricted free agent next season.
Windhorst said: “The question is going to be, if he doesn’t get an offer sheet, will the Bulls play hardball and make him come back on a one-year contract, or actually reward him?
“They have extended Lonzo Ball. If they do see him (Giddey) as their point guard of the future — and that’s why they traded Alex Caruso — then I would expect them to try and invest in him.
“Last year, this was the same situation with Patrick Williams on their team. He was a restricted free agent. They signed him on July 1st to a five-year long contract.
“I expect them to try do something with Giddey, but it has been puzzling why they kept his role narrow early on.
“I will bet on Josh Giddey and I will bet on him getting a very long contract, whether he gets it this year or has to wait another year and end up as an unrestricted free agent.”
Giddey left Chicago’s game against Indiana on Tuesday wearing a walking boot after suffering a sprained ankle.
The Bulls said they won’t know the severity of the injury for a few days.
Fellow Aussie Dyson Daniels is also set to get a massive pay rise following a breakout season with the Atlanta Hawks.
With 17 games remaining this season, Daniels has already racked up 180 steals — the most by any player in a season since Ricky Rubio in 2013-14.
The NBA defensive stopper has broken all sorts of defensive records this season, thriving in a more prominent role at the Hawks after being traded from the New Orleans Pelicans last off-season.
The 21-year-old from Bendigo is a lock for All-Defensive First Team honours and is still a big chance to win Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY), although recent history suggests that award will go to a big man instead of a perimeter defender like Daniels.
Daniels is currently the second favourite in the betting markets for DPOY behind Cleveland Cavaliers centre Evan Mobley.
With Ben Simmons’ USD$40 million contract expiring, Giddey and Daniels are in line to become some of Australia’s richest athletes.
