The Basketball Show: Episode 22

Championship-winning Melbourne United star Mitch McCarron has informed his United teammates via WhatsApp that he is leaving to join the Adelaide 36ers as Josh Giddey’s point guard replacement.

McCarron was also weighing up offers from Brisbane, Sydney and United, but he opted to sign with the 36ers on a three-year deal.

He informed his title-winning Melbourne teammates via a group message on Wednesday morning that he will be joining Adelaide to fill the point guard gap left by NBA draft-bound star Giddey.

McCarron’s signing is a major coup for the 36ers, who are also in the process of locking down star big man Isaac Humphries.

Adelaide is also desperate to climb the NBL ladder following an inconsistent season, where they finished seventh with a 13-23 record.

McCarron is expected to perfectly complement the 36ers’ roster alongside the likes of Humphries, Daniel Johnson, and Sunday Dech.

The Alice Springs-born guard is coming off a stellar season with United. On top of the championship, he was named in the All-NBL second team.

McCarron averaged 10.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game in the 2021 season.

He will be playing NBL1 in Brisbane this off-season for the Northside Wizards before joining his new Adelaide teammates to prepare for the new NBL season.
