THE Pittsburgh Steelers might have been atrocious, but Australian punter Brad Wing was a shining light as his team was belted by Baltimore.

Wing was called on to punt four times and even had to make a tackle in the 26-6 loss as the Steelers struggled on offence all night, with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger throwing for just 217 yards and completing just 22 of his 37 pass attempts.

The misfiring Pittsburgh offense meant Wing had plenty of opportunities to showcase his prodigious kick, with his four punts averaging 34 yards and his longest kick measuring a towering 56 yards.

But it was early in the final quarter when he really earned his pay, when the Steelers’ punt return defence was sliced wide open by the Ravens’ Jacoby Jones and Wing was forced to tackle Jones himself.

The former Aussie Rules prospect was up to the task and brought Jones down after a 33-yard run.

The Steelers were their own worst enemy, with Roesthlisberger throwing an interception and wide receiver Justin Brown and tight end Heath Miller both fumbling the ball at critical moments.

Ravens tight end Owen Daniels had no such trouble, catching the only two touchdowns of the game.

His first, halfway through the first quarter, came off a two-yard pass from quarterback Joe Flacco after a relentless 85-yard Ravens’ drive down the field, and the second came in the third quarter when Flacco again picked him out in the end zone for a one-yard gain.

Baltimore’s win ended a tumultuous week for the home team, after star running back Ray Rice was sacked when video footage emerged of him knocking his wife unconscious in an elevator.
