Queenslander Cameron Smith booked his ticket to Augusta National with a stunning come from behind win in Hawaii to secure his maiden solo PGA Tour event.

Smith, who donated $500 for every birdie he made at the Sony Open to bushfire relief, said he hoped the win would bring some “joy to Australia” after also revealing his uncle’s home in country NSW had been razed in the disaster.

“He went back down there on Monday or Tuesday. What he found was quite devastating,” an emotional Smith said after his victory.

“I kind of saw the photos, and, yeah, the only thing he had left was a little shed that him and his son built a few months back.

“We’re a tight knit family and kind of hit everyone pretty hard. It’s good to do something good, and hopefully puts a smile on their face.

“I hope this brings a bit of joy to Australia. I know we are going through some tough times.”

The 26-year-old was two shots behind leader Brendan Steele with two holes to play.

But after the leader made bogey on the 17th, Smith birdied the 18th hole to force a playoff in conditions so wet ground staff were forced to push water off the rain-soaked greens.

Smith then nailed a clutch second shot from the trees on the first extra hole, giving him two putts for victory after Steele missed the green

The victory was Smith’s first stand-alone PGA tour victory, having won the two-man Zurich Classic in New Orleans in 2017.

Smith, a two-time Australian PGA champ, secured $1.7 million, earned a two-year playing exemption on the US PGA Tour and secured his spot at the Masters in April.

The Aussie raised $18,500 with countryman Marc Leishman after their cash for birdies pledge.

An Olympic medal could also be on the agenda for Smith after revealing his ambition to make the team for this year’s Tokyo games, having spoken to team captain Ian Baker-Finch.

“I know he is egging for me to get on the team. I’ll be trying my best for sure,” Smith said.

“I definitely want to be there and wear that green and gold as much as I can.”

Fellow Aussie Australia Cameron Davis finished in a share of ninth in Hawaii, while Leishman was tied for 28th.
