Ash Barty claims ladies competition at Brookwater Country Club to send tongues wagging

Less than a fortnight after her retirement from tennis sent shockwaves around the world, Ash Barty has bagged another title in yet another sport, triggering rumours over her next career move.

Ash Barty was ‘blitzing the opposition’ before announcing her retirement

Her retirement sent shockwaves around the sporting world but less than a fortnight after calling time on tennis, Ash Barty has added another title to her growing list of accolades.

Barty won the ladies competition at the Brookwater Golf and Country Club on Saturday which has sparked rumours over her next career move.

The Australian Open, Wimbledon and French Open winner said she had climbed every mountain she wanted in her career and retired from tennis at the peak having been the number one player for the past two years.

The former Brisbane Heat star has been a club member of the Brookwater Country Club for the past few years.

The 25-year-old, who plays of a handicap of 4, shot a round of 34 to finish first over Rhonda Clarke.

Brookwater Golf Club’s Jordan Hampson said Barty was one of five ladies competing in Saturday’s tournament.

Mr Hampson revealed Barty shot two over her handicap.

“She’s a great golfer actually but I don’t think she’d be too happy with her score yesterday,” Mr Hampson said.

“When she won the club championship in 2020 that was a way bigger deal.”

Mr Hampson said Barty was very well liked among the members particularly for her down to earth nature.

“Everyone loves her,” he said.

He was unwilling to speculate whether she was in for a career change.

It’s not the first success Barty has claimed at Brookwater – in 2020 she famously won the club championship and earned praise from Tiger Woods and Aussie Louis Dobbelaar.

Dobbelaar, twice a Queensland amateur champion, said Barty was a natural at golf.

“She’s got all the tools if she wants to pursue it. If she put her mind to it, I’m sure she could,” Dobbelaar told AAP in 2020.

“I’ve seen quite a lot of golfers come from different sports and she’s the one that stands out the most — by far actually. Her ball-striking is really good. She just gets that naturally from tennis, the hand-eye stuff.”
