OJ Simpson’s official cause of death was prostate cancer.
Simpson’s attorney, Malcolm Laverne, also the executor of the ex-football star’s estate, told TMZ the death certificate confirmed cancer was the cause of his April 10 death.
Simpson was 76.
He had long downplayed his health concerns despite revealing in a May 2023 video he’d been battling cancer, the New York Post reports.
In the weeks before his death he appeared frail and was using a cane.
“Thank you to all the people who reached out to me. My health is good,” Simpson said in a video posted to X on February 11.
“Obviously I’m dealing with some issues, but I think I’m just about over it, and I’ll be back on that golf course hopefully in a couple of weeks.”
Simpson was acquitted of the 1995 double murder involving his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, in a legal case that captivated the world.
He was later found liable for their deaths in 1997.
Simpson’s legal troubles didn’t end there, as he was sentenced to nine years in prison in 2008 for armed robbery and other felonies for an armed confrontation over sports memorabilia in a Las Vegas hotel room.
He had reportedly been receiving hospice care in Las Vegas before his passing.
His death brought about mixed reactions, including those in the sports world.
Simpson rose to fame during his Heisman Trophy-winning tenure at USC before going on to an award-filled Hall of Fame NFL career with the Buffalo Bills.
He further entrenched himself in pop culture with acting roles in “Roots” and “The Naked Gun” trilogy and was a pitchman for Hertz rental cars among other brands.
