For a team as consistently good as Sydney has been over the past decade, the length of time since their last win over Port Adelaide is nearing on a curse.

In the years since their 67 point win at the SCG in round 20, 2016, the Swans have taken on Port eight times - and have lost each time.

The most recent occasion was just six weeks ago and resulted in an embarrassing 112 point drubbing. Remember that 72-0 scoreline late in the second quarter?

Eight years is a long time in footy, and the teams that face off at the SCG on Friday night will look bit different to how they did in 2016.

Port’s John Butcher and Paul Stewart were playing in their final AFL games, alongside current Hawks Jarman Impey and Karl Amon and against present-day Power backman Aliir Aliir - then a Swan.

And the Swans on their way to a grand final had Geelong premiership player Gary Rohan, Tigers’ three time flag winner Toby Nankervis and Buddy Franklin among their number.

This Friday night’s preliminary final will feature four Port players from that match up, and seven Swans who played in 2016 (including Aliir) - it would have been eight but for Callum Mills’ hamstring injury.
