We look at how your club has fared in the past with the draft picks they hold this year

GEELONG and Adelaide will be hoping history repeats on AFL Draft night. We look at every club’s picks and whether they’ve proved lucky in the past.

Former Cats Steve Johnson and Cameron Ling were selected with picks No.24 and 38.

HISTORY isn’t necessarily a good indicator of draft success.

Geelong, Adelaide and Collingwood will certainly be hoping history repeats on November 25 when the best young talent find their future homes.

The Cats’ first two picks, 24 and 38, produced triple-premiership stars Steve Johnson and Cameron Ling not to mention 2009 premiership ruckman Mark Blake.

The Crows too will be hoping their picks produce talent as they have in the past with Daniel Talia arriving the last time they held pick No.13.

The Magpies have also unearthed premiership talent with the picks they hold this year.

Chris Dawes was taken with pick No.28 in 2006 and Ben Johnson with pick No.62 in 1999 while young stars Tom Langdon and Ben Crocker have arrived in recent seasons via pick No.65.

Meanwhile, the likes of Hawthorn, Melbourne and Carlton will be hoping for more luck this time around.

ADELAIDE CROWS

13 - Daniel Talia (122 games)

43 - Mitch McGovern (23)

53 - Adam Ugrinic (0), Hayden Skipworth (44)

67 - Robert Shirley (151), Graham Johncock (227)

The Crows have had early and late-draft success with the picks they hold this year. Talia is a best-and-fairest winner while Shirley and Johncock were important players during their careers.

BRISBANE LIONS (includes Fitzroy and Brisbane Bears)

3 - Carl Dilena (23), David Donato (12), Rory Hilton (9), Jared Brennan (119)

16 - David Bain (86), Shane Clayton (18)

21 - Shane Hodges (4)

22 - Richard Hadley (41), Albert Proud (29), Darcy Gardiner (43)

76 - Matt Rendell (13)

There’s been limited success for Brisbane with their picks in previous years. Brennan was flashy but inconsistent, Bain was a solid player for the Bears while Hadley is a premiership player for the merged Brisbane Lions.

EVERY PICK: UPDATED 2016 DRAFT ORDER

CARLTON

5 - Nil

25 - Doug Smart (0), Adam Hartlett (11)

48 - Matthew Hopkins (0)

63 - Jacob Anstey (16), Glen Bowyer (20), Jayden Foster (0)

66 - Nil

70 - Trent Hopper (1), Nick Duigan (43)

The Blues haven’t had a pick No.5 in their history and haven’t had a whole lot of success with their other picks. Nick Duigan is the best of the bunch before his retired prematurely due to injury before the 2014 season.

At pick No.62, Ben Johnson is one of Collingwood’s best draft choices.
At pick No.62, Ben Johnson is one of Collingwood’s best draft choices.

COLLINGWOOD

28 - Chris Dawes (71)

51 - Nil

62 - Ben Johnson (235), Ben Sinclair (63)

65 - Brad Cassidy (2), Lee Walker (16), Corey Gault (6), Tom Langdon (46), Ben Crocker (10)

Collingwood will be happy with these selections. Premiership players Chris Dawes and Ben Johnson arrived in 2006 and 1999 respectively while Tom Langdon and Ben Crocker look promising prospects.

ESSENDON

1 - Nil

20 - Scott Cummings (40), Dean Solomon (158), Tom Hislop (7), Jayden Laverde (18)

29 - Scott Mollard (0), Alex Morgan (0)

41 - Nil

68 - Simon Eastaugh (17), Michael Hartley (19)

The Bombers have used pick No.20 four time in the past and it’s hard to look past premiership star Dean Solomon as the best of those picks. Scott Cummings was promising before departing while Jayden Laverde looks to have a big future.

FREMANTLE

7 - Ben Edwards (0), Rhys Palmer (53)

35 - Nil

40 - Chris Mayne (172)

71 - Cameron Sutcliffe (87)

79 - Greg Broughton (rookie elevation, 68)

Fremantle thought they were onto a winner with Rhys Palmer at pick No.7. The midfielder won the AFL Rising Star in his debut year but has never lived up to that standard. Chris Mayne was a key part of Ross Lyon’s gameplan but joined Collingwood this off-season.

GEELONG

24 - Steve Johnson (253)

38 - David Innella (0), Cameron Ling (246), Mark Blake (father-son, 99)

44 - Matthew Spencer (2), Nathan Vardy (25)

64 - Nil, 72 - Nil, 74 - Nil

Cats fans will be pretty happy if the next Stevie J or premiership captain Cameron Ling walk through the door after November 25. Father-son pick Mark Blake played in the 2009 flag while Nathan Vardy was hampered by injuries and was traded to West Coast last month.

Peter Wright proved a smart selection with pick No.8

GOLD COAST SUNS

4 - Nil

6 - Nil

8 - Peter Wright (20), Callum Ah Chee (16)

10 - Daniel Gorringe (22)

73 - Nil

The Suns will use picks No.4 and 6 for the first time this year but will be pretty happy with the previous choices at pick No.8. Peter Wright is developing nicely while Callum Ah Chee played 16 games in his debut season.

GWS GIANTS

2 - Stephen Coniglio (85), Jono O’Rourke (9), Josh Kelly (60)

15 - Nil, 37 - Nil, 45 - Nil, 52 - Nil, 55 - Nil, 57 - Nil, 58 - Nil, 59 - Nil, 60 - Nil

The Giants don’t mind pick No.2, they’ve held it three times in their five-year history. It’s produced key players Stephen Coniglio and Josh Kelly. GWS hold nine other picks but they are likely to be cashed in for their academy stars.

HAWTHORN

88 - Tim Leng (0), Aiden Bussell (0), Phillip Smith (0)

90 - Adam Aherne (0)

The Hawks don’t enter the draft until pick No.88 and will be hoping to unearth a hidden gem, but history hasn’t been kind. Of the four players picked with picks No.88 and 90, none have played an AFL game.

MELBOURNE

47 - Nil

69 - Matthew Mahoney (6), Scott Simister (3)

Melbourne’s draft night looks to be a quiet one. They’ll use pick No.47 for the first time ever and look to do better than their previous choices with pick No.69.

NORTH MELBOURNE

11 - Danny Sexton (0)

32 - Brad Sholl (2), Levi Greenwood (74)

33 - Malcolm Shippen (0), Matthew Kelly (0), Sam McFarlane (2), Mitch Hibberd (0)

Not a lot to write home about here for North. Sexton never played a game, Sholl became a star at Geelong and while Greenwood provided good service, he departed for Collingwood in 2014.

PORT ADELAIDE

14 - Nil

17 - Nil

30 - Brad Symes (20), Nick Lower (20), Mason Shaw (0)

31 - Nil

In fairness, Port have never held three of their four draft picks previously. The one they have held, pick No.30, hasn’t been kind with three players playing 40 games between them.

RICHMOND

27 - Brendan Gale (244)

56 - Greg Whittlesea (0), Matthew Clarke (0)

The Tigers might only have two draft picks but pick No.27 delivered club great Brendan Gale in 1987. If the recruiting team can repeat that effort, they’ll be delighted.

ST KILDA

23 - Nil

36 - Andrew Lamb (0)

61 - Michael Addison (0)

Three picks, two players, zero games. St Kilda is almost starting from scratch with its three picks. What can they find on November 25?

SYDNEY SWANS

9 - Nil

19 - Nil

46 - Tim Membrey (1)

49 - Craig Elias (0), Jim Silvestro (8), Simon Garlick (44), Dan Currie (0)

The Swans will use picks No.9 and 19 for the first time ever. It’s the highest the Swans have picked (not including Academy selections) since 2009 when they snared Gary Rohan at No.6. Tim Membrey and Simon Garlick went on to bigger things at rival clubs.

WEST COAST EAGLES

12 - Shane Porter (0), Shane Sikora (3), Jaxon Crabb (15)

34 - Travis Burton (0), Andrew Williams (84)

54 - Ian Downsborough (20)

If you’re a glass half-full type, you’d argue the Eagles are trending up with their first-round picks — zero games up to three and then 15. Andrew Williams was a solid citizen after being taken with pick No.34 in 1997.

WESTERN BULLDOGS

18 - Mark Alvey (45)

26 - Shane Birss (51), Toby McLean (19), Kieran Collins (1)

50 - Iszac Thompson (0), Josh Prudden (4)

75 - Nil

Amazingly, the Dogs hold pick No.26 for the third straight season and will be confident of finding another young gun after securing premiership player McLean and promising key defender Collins in the last two drafts. Surprisingly, it’s not the first time the Dogs have held pick No.18; they picked Alvey in 1997.
