John Longmire only needs to prove two premiership coaches wrong to put his club firmly in the premiership race.

At Melbourne last year as soon as Max Gawn proved himself over a medial ligament sprain Simon Goodwin’s plans for a powerful ruck combo including Brodie Grundy fell by the wayside.

At Collingwood, Craig McRae deemed inside beast Taylor Adams surplus to requirements as a centre square warrior.

Both are beloved ex-Collingwood stars.

Longmire will believe both have fuel left in the tank, and so he should.

Criteria: Prediction of their 2024 performance based on their 2023 season, expected improvement and role in their side.

It is why Grundy gets a mark of 79 despite finishing his Melbourne season stuck playing VFL while Josh Schache was preferred as a sub in a cut-throat September contest.

Adams isn’t far behind on a ranking of 74 because he will throw his heart and soul into becoming the clearance player the Swans need after being nudged to half forward at times in 2023.

If he can stick the proverbial middle finger up at his former club Collingwood with a brilliant year playing centre square mid, it would only be an added bonus.

Sydney has its emerging stars - Errol Gulden, Chad Warner, and Nick Blakey.

But the performances of Grundy and Adams might shape the Swans’ season, especially given captain Cal Mills will only return in the second half of the season.
