AFL trade guru Jon Ralph held a live trade chat on Wednesday and went through some of the biggest names in the game.
You can recap all the highlights of Ralphy’s trade chat and get his take on Jake Stringer, Jake Lever, Charlie Cameron and Josh Schache below.
TRADE CHAT: WHICH DEALS IS YOUR CLUB CHASING?
TOUGH CALL: GAZ OR STRINGER? CATS CAN’T HAVE BOTH
QUESTION FROM TIM:
Why would Lever want to go to Melbourne? Or anyone to be honest.
RALPHY SAYS:
Funny old world. As Sam Docherty said about coming home when on radio yesterday, players would rather be an hour car ride from their family and friends than an hour plane ride.
He also has a partner who might want to come back.
If he stays at Adelaide he gets 5 years of a premiership window, he plays alongside Talia and Kelly, he might be the captain. But his heart is telling him to come home clearly.
QUESTION FROM DUCKY:
What chance of Sam Lloyd of Richmond being a trade target given he cannot get a look in at the seniors?
RALPHY SAYS:
Yeah, I would think he and Anthony Miles would be going somewhere. Put it this way — he isn’t getting a game at the Tigers. And would he get a shot at the worst club out there? So that’s on ladder Carlton, Brisbane and Gold Coast. Gold Coast would slot him in as a handy lead-up to keep defenders honest on Tom Lynch. So if he was delisted or wanted out, I am sure there would be another home for him.
QUESTION FROM MICHELLE:
What could the Crows expect in trade for Charlie Cameron?
RALPHY SAYS:
I still think a first rounder. They probably won’t let him go and at least right now Brisbane are saying he isn’t their first priority. I keep thinking if the Lions took their first pick, used their early second rounder on Connor Ballenden — that pick is 18 — and used their Port Adelaide first-rounder on Cameron, it would work out well. Right now they seem to have irons in other fires.
They know everyone will come hard at Josh Schache. His manager David Trotter says he is staying unless Brisbane trades him. There is one line of thought they should trade him while everyone else thinks he is good. Let’s face it, he hasn’t set the world on fire. But I think he’s on track after two years, he is a great kick, he will build a tank, he has kicked the same amount of goals roughly as Hawkins after two years. I think it would be insane to trade him. But smarter men than me work in list management. And they know whether he’s going to be good or if there are very worrying signs about his development. Lots of players would walk over broken coals to play a Grand Final of any sort. He didn’t seem too fussed about it. Very strange.
QUESTION FROM JULIE:
Ralphy, I see the Demons delisted Jake Spencer. Surely someone picks him up — so why not try to trade him? Is it that they don’t think they’ll get much, or that out of respect for him they want to give him certainty on his future (i.e. not with Melbourne) and clear the way for him to find a new club?
RALPHY SAYS:
Great question Julie. He is an unrestricted free agent so they wouldn’t trade him but if they kept him on their list and someone offered him a reasonable deal they might still get a late compensation pick for him. Clearly they have crunched the numbers and think that won’t happen.
As soon as he was delisted it seemed to make no sense. Someone will sign him for sure. As Terry Wallace said, if Dan Currie is still on a list after all these years, Spencer is getting picked up.
QUESTION FROM STEVE:
Todd Goldstein, what’s the deal there?
RALPHY SAYS:
I asked him as he was walking out of SEN as me and KB were walking in last Wednesday. He said he had heard nothing from his manager, from the club, from anyone else so he presumes he is staying. Then Brad Scott said the club wanted another ruckman at the club on Nine’s Sunday show. Surely they have enough with Goldy, Preuss, Majak and Nick Larkey. Is Larkey more a forward or ruck at 198cm? You would have seen him more than me. I just think their issue is no one is dead keen on Goldy given his age, his price tag, what you would have to give up to get him. If you could get Stef Martin at half his wage and with a player who is better around the ground, you would go for him wouldn’t you? So I figure if they get a great offer for him they let him go in a heartbeat. But there are real challenges in terms of finding that fit.
Even Geelong, which might have needed a ruck at the half way point of the year, have found Wylie Buzza who has huge potential.
QUESTION FROM ANDREW:
Do you think players might look at Essendon as a desirable destination now that the saga has finished, exciting list, great facilities, big games (Anzac) & big crowds? Do you think they will get anyone during the trade period?
RALPHY SAYS:
Yes I do. Nice if they could win a final but good facilities, the waft of ASADA has gone, you get to play in Anzac and Dreamtime at the ‘G, if you come in as a key tall it’s not as the pea. If you come in as a mid you have Heppell, Parish, McGrath around you. And Merrett.
Here is the question — with Kelly retiring and McGrath set to go into the midfield, who takes those half back spots. Baguley will keep playing there, but who else steps up. Or who of the young breed does? Would love it if Francis pulled his finger out and took a spot there as the third intercepting tall.
QUESTION FROM JOHNNY:
Pies have been rather quiet lately, who do you feel they need to trade out this off season?
RALPHY SAYS:
I can’t work out if they are just quiet until they unleash or just have no money.
I know they have been tight with the salary cap the last two years. If Lever wanted to come to them, they might have to move others out. Would they give up their first rounder and a Scharenberg type? The problem is they don’t have too many players who would be attractive to the Crows, who pretty much don’t have too many weaknesses. They said in their review they wanted to rearrange their salary cap, but Mayne and Wells are locked in for four and three years respectively, they will have to recontract Darcy Moore next year, they have committed to their stars, I can’t see that they have a heck of a lot of cap space.
QUESTION FROM NATHAN:
Put your neck out there Ralphy. Who are the following going to or will they stay (only 1 word answers needed):
Kelly
Lever
Fasolo
Goldy
Stringer
Rocky
Trengrove
RALPHY SAYS:
KELLY — Signs for two years with GWS.
LEVER — Signs for 5 years at 800 at Melbourne. Gets Melbourne’s first pick and maybe their first for next year with a Adelaide second-rounder back
FASOLO — Stays. Think like Menzel he doesn’t have enough tackle pressure for others to jump at him but he will kick 45 for the Pies next year.
GOLDY — Stays.
STRINGER — Gets to Essendon on a four-year 2.4 million deal. They give up pick 11 and it gets it done
ROCKY — Stays.
TRENGOVE — Gets to Stevo’s Bulldogs on a three-year $1.8 million deal.
QUESTION FROM MIKE:
I can only guess that the Hawks will have salary cap up their sleeves. But little trade pick bargaining power with our first round this year already gone to St Kilda. Do you think the Hawks will target a certain type of player? Living in NSW the only rumour I’ve heard is Ty maybe moving on ... alas not heard any rumoured targets. Thoughts?
RALPHY SAYS:
So your forward line will again have Rioli, Rough, Breust, your backline will have, Burton, Birchall back, Frawley back, Stratton back Hardwick as a small, you can swing Gunston back or forward. So you think the priority is the midfield despite them getting heaps from Tom Mitchell and Jaeger O’Meara getting a lot of confidence in there in the last two weeks
Its best is Mitchell, Shiels, O’Meara, Smith, Burgoyne, Howe. They still need to add depth there. They like Lovell who was injured a bit. Surely their priority is the midfield.
I reckon they have locked away someone but can’t get a bead on who it is. That club is too cunning not to pull off some miracle trade. The only mistake according to those who know would be trading out next year’s first rounder given how many people love that 2018 ... wait for it ... SUPERDRAFT!!!!!!
