AFL trade news: Live updates and news from day 2 of AFL trade period

Dan Houston is one of the biggest names in AFL trade talk, but Port Adelaide has other priorities. And that could impact other clubs including Collingwood.

Collingwood in box seat for Dan Houston

Port Adelaide is happy to look ahead instead of getting caught up in a deal to send away Dan Houston.

The Power entered the trade period with a remit to improve its forward half and expects to land Gold Coast’s Jack Lukosius and Collingwood’s Joe Richards, who have both requested trades to Alberton.

The Lukosius deal should be ticked off early in the trade period, with Suns list boss Craig Cameron confirming it will likely cost Port Adelaide a future pick.

And the Suns will not pay any of Lukosius’ hefty salary next year.

The Richards deal may end up tied up with Houston but Power footy boss Chris Davies said trading the star half-back was lower on the club’s list of priorities.

“Our remit throughout the entire back half of the year was to look at what we can bring in in the front half,” he said.

“Dan’s situation has necessitated us to look at what we could offer (for a defensive replacement) but ultimately we aren’t going to get caught up in having to offer too much for players.

“Our priority is to get Jack Lukosius and Joe Richards and if we can get a deal done for Dan to go, we will look at that, but ultimately we want to be better in 2025.”

St Kilda is the frontrunner for wantaway ruck Ivan Soldo but the Saints have been sluggish to begin serious talks with clubs across the league.

Davies said Port wasn’t as keen to lose Soldo as the Richmond premiership player was to get out after he fell behind Jordan Sweet in the ruck stakes.

“Ivan’s season was unfortunately hampered through injury and we didn’t bring two rucks in last year for want to tip one of them out straight away,” Davies said.

“I just don’t think he settled into Adelaide maybe as well as he would have liked and I am sure he sort of came to us with the view of being the No.1 ruck, and I’m not sure how long-term we would want to commit to that.”

Davies was hunted by Collingwood to be its new footy boss this off-season but turned that down “because I have a really good job at Port Adelaide and I am happy to continue to try and help Port Adelaide achieve their goals”.
