SHANE Mumford's AFL return is nearer to a reality.

The GWS ruckman-turned-coach announced he was considering a comeback to help the Giants' ruck dilemma with Rory Lobb requesting a trade to Fremantle earlier this week.

Mumford retired at the end of 2017 due to a serious foot injury but is now confident his body is back to 100 per cent.

The Giants have opened negotiations with the Dockers on Lobb and football manager Wayne Campbell said Mumford was very much in the club's off-season plans.

"Jason McCartney has been having some good discussions with Steve Rosich. They're really keen on Rory and see him as a really valuable player for them," he told Trade Radio.

"He's (Mumford) been running around a bit. The foot was really bad at the end of last year but he's been our ruck coach and there was one particular session where he touched up all our blokes. So we thought maybe we should explore this.

"There's a fair bit of water to go under the bridge, but we'll see what happens over the next four to six weeks and potentially look at having Shane on our list in 2019."

The Giants would have to re-draft Mumford instead of securing him for free as a free agent or in a trade.

Dawson Simpson should be fit for Round 1 after a serious ankle injury ruined his 2018 while the Giants also have untried 200cm ruckman Matthew Flynn.
