WHEN Liam Picken was knocked out in a sickening clash with Fremantle’s Tommy Sheridan on Saturday night, everyone was concerned about his well-being but none more so than his wife and children who were watching at home in Melbourne.

The premiership hero was concussed when Sheridan landed on his head in the second quarter and was left laying alone on the Subiaco turf as play continued around him.

The umpire, remarkably, did not stop play despite it being in Picken’s vicinity until Dockers star Nat Fyfe put his hand up.

Picken’s wife, Annie Nolan, was sitting at home watching the Bulldogs play the Dockers in Perth with their children before sharing a heartbreaking reminder of the brutal nature of AFL football.

After seeing his dad knocked out and helped from the field by Bulldogs trainers, Annie shared a photo of son Malachy in tears.

“This pic (sic) is one of a thousand reasons why this is more than a game to us,” she wrote in the photo’s caption on Instagram. “Knocks to the head will always be my most hated part of this sport.

“Just a reminder to never take joy in the hurt/injury of opposition players (or anyone for that matter.)

“Not sure if Liam will run back out tonight but it was upsetting to witness what we just did.”

Thankfully, Picken was not seriously injured as a result of the incident but he did not take any further part in the game, watching on from the Bulldogs’ bench after failing a concussion test.

He was up and walking with the rest of his teammates after the match.

Picken will be in doubt for the first ever Good Friday AFL match next Friday, with just a six-day turnaround to recover ahead of the clash with North Melbourne.
