Veteran Port Adelaide star Travis Boak has bucked the trend by signing a two-year contract extension with the club.

Just days after fellow veteran Robbie Gray agreed to a new one-year deal, 31-year-old Boak has signed on until the end of the 2022 season.

This ensures the popular Victorian will finish his career as a one-club player.

Former captain Boak has been rewarded for a standout 2019 campaign when he won the Power best and fairest award after being released back into the midfield from half-forward and averaging a career-high 30 disposals and seven clearances.

Boak, whose previous John Cahill Medal came in 2011, ranks third in the most games for the Power with 264 in 13 seasons after being recruited at pick five at the 2006 national draft from the Geelong Falcons.

An All-Australian in 2013 and 2014, he in 2012 resisted strong overtures to return to Victoria and join Geelong to remain loyal to Port.

His two-year deal, when most clubs offer only one-year extensions to players over 30, illustrates how highly the Power regards him.

“Port Adelaide is special to me, as it is to so many other people, and I couldn’t be happier to get the chance to continue to play footy here for the next couple of years,” Boak said.

“It’s an exciting time at the club and we have a seriously talented group that I am eager to stay a part of.

“I can’t wait to see what we can achieve together.”

In offering Boak a two-year deal, Power general manager of football Chris Davies described him as “the ultimate professional’’.

“He had a wonderful 2019 season and is in great shape to attack this coming season,’’ Davies said.

“Having someone of his quality as both a player and person will be important in our success.”

Boak is Port’s longest-serving skipper, having captained the club from 2013-18 before relinquishing the role.
