Hawthorn
Don't miss out on the headlines from Hawthorn. Followed categories will be added to My News.
GUN GWS midfielder Dylan Shiel is under contract but don’t be surprised if he’s a Hawk next year.
And back-up ruckman Jonathon Ceglar could be the key to a trade.
Ceglar performed admirably in 10 matches this year but was pushed out of the Hawthorn team when Ben McEvoy returned from injury in Round 22. He could be a long-term solution for the Giants’ ruck issues.

ON THE MOVE: PORT WON’T MATCH POLEC OFFER
“We keep hearing Hawthorn (is linked to Shiel),” Herald Sun reporter Sam Edmund said on this week’s episode of TradeTV.
“The theory that was put to me was that Ceglar will go to GWS and that GWS would send Shiel down here — obviously that wouldn’t be a straight swap, Hawthorn would have to sweeten the deal with a draft pick — and Hawthorn, according to the theory, would potentially pay some of Ceglar’s salary.”
Edmund said when asked about the proposal the Giants responded that they didn’t need a ruckman and that “Ceglar’s name has never come up”.
“What do you believe or not believe?”
“Dylan Shiel — watch this space. (He’s) contracted for next year but definitely wants to come back (to Melbourne). I’m not a betting man at all but if I was forced to take a bet I would bet on him coming back this year.”
Sam and Jon Ralph discussed a range of players in today’s episode — here’s a snapshot.
MITCH McGOVERN
The Crows forward has requested a trade and Carlton is his mostly likely home.
Ralph suggested the Blues use an expected mid-first round priority pick in a straight swap for the 23-year-old.
“I think the very good news from Carlton is they are not prepared to give up their first pick for him. I think he’s a very exciting player, he is not a proven talent, he’s nowhere near their first pick,” Ralph said.
“I think Adelaide would feel pick 12 is about the right price.”
But he said Collingwood should also throw its hat in the ring for the goalkicker.
“If I was Collingwood I would be saying, ‘I love Brody Mihoeck, I love Mason Cox, but Mitch McGovern, he’s the man for us’.”
DAYNE BEAMS
Edmund: “It’s the most intriguing story because everyone you speak to — the Brisbane Lions, his management — say he’s staying … but there’s been that much smoke around this bloke that some people are convinced there has to be fire.”
Ralph said the Lions have conceded Beams will return to Victoria after his contract expires in two years, and a move could come earlier.
“I’ve got no doubt that if someone offered them a really strong package that included a 23-year-old inside midfielder or whatever it might be, they’d be negligent not to have a little bit of a think about it.”
TOM LYNCH
Ralph: “I think his management threw a bit of burley in the water, talking about how interested Collingwood was … now we probably believe that was a smokescreen to distract us a little bit. Richmond has probably been into him and has probably had him since the start of the year.”
JARED POLEC
Ralph: “Polec is coming to North Melbourne, let’s not even talk about it as speculation — it will happen.”
ANDREW GAFF
Ralph: “I think Andrew Gaff is becoming more and more likely to go to North Melbourne … I think he’s probably having lunch with those close to him today to talk about all these things.
“The deal at North Melbourne is $1.1 million or $1.2 million over seven years, at the very most that’s $8.4 million … it’s not to say the deal is done but he’s increasingly likely to come back.”
Ralph said Gold Coast’s Aaron Hall could also land at Arden St.
SCOTT LYCETT
Ralph: “St Kilda has offered a little more cash but Port Adelaide is the club he wants to go to if he decides to leave West Coast. That’s not to say he has officially left West Coast but the jungle drums are beating that way.”
EDDIE BETTS
Ralph: “They (his management) have been adamant in print that it won’t happen. That doesn’t always mean things won’t change.”
