Greater Western Sydney have suffered a shattering blow with current club champion Tim Taranto to miss at least half the season with a shoulder injury.
The midfielder will undergo a shoulder reconstruction this week with the recovery time around four to five months.
Taranto lasted just 10 minutes of Saturday’s Marsh Series win over the Sydney Swans at Blacktown International Sportspark after dislocating his right shoulder. The joint popped back into place before he left the field but scans have revealed surgery is the best option.
“We could have gone the non-surgical route but considering he hasn’t had any history of shoulder injuries and his young age, it was decided that surgery was the best option to ensure a full recovery,” Giants general manager of football Jason McCartney said.

“Tim will apply himself to his rehab as diligently as he does his football and we expect to see him back on the field in the latter half of the season.
“While disappointing for Tim, it does provide an opportunity to our young midfield group that are coming through and hungry to show what they can do at AFL level.”
The Giants continue their pre-season preparations on Sunday when they face Richmond in Wagga Wagga.
