Peter Wright gets a kiss from Gold Coast coach Rodney after kicking the winning goal against West Coast

IT was something Peter Wright had never seen Rodney Eade do, but after kicking the winning goal against West Coast the gesture from the Suns coach was well deserved.

WHEN Rodney Eade grabbed Peter Wright and planted a kiss on his cheek on Saturday evening it said better than any words could what the three-point win over West Coast meant to everyone at the Suns.

The word on the Suns this year has been that they wilt under pressure.

Yet Wright displayed nerves of steel to kick the goal from 45m out with a minute and a half left on the clock to put the Suns in front.

It was a major moment for the player who has been battling through the first real form slump of his young career.

And, having come from 10 points down to claim the win, it ended the Suns’ trend of folding in the face of momentum swings.

“Yeah it definitely was an important win, it was really crucial that we were able to respond after a few tough weeks,’’ Wright said.

“Coming into the rooms Rocket gave me a little kiss, I don’t think he’s done that before so it was pretty emotional.

“It was important for us to be able to respond, we made some mistakes but we stuck to our process and we were able to show that when we play our brand of footy we can match it with anyone in the competition.’’

Wright is a good kick and despite a stiff cross breeze, the shot was regulation.

It was the occasion that presented the major test.

“I didn’t really know how long was left in the game, and whenever I’m having a shot I back myself to kick through the ball and follow the routine I’ve done thousands of times before,’’ he said.

Wright wants the best game he has played this year to be a step toward rediscovering the form of last year that made him a rising star of the competition.

“I hope so, I haven’t been as good I would have liked,’’ he said.

“For me it is about continuously working hard, impacting the contests I am involved in and making sure I am getting to as many contests as possible and having a real jump at the footy.’’

The Suns now face the most important game of their season against Hawthorn at the MCG.

If they can beat them for the second time then back up against Carlton the next week, their ledger will be square.

Wright acknowledged the Suns were a different side at home than on the road.

“We feel really comfortable at Metricon Stadium and we love playing there,’’ he said.

“The challenge is to travel and produce that same footy, we just have to take the same intensity, it is extra important at away games because you have to build your own enthusiasm and atmosphere.’’
