GEELONG superstar Jimmy Bartel says his work raising awareness about domestic violence is more important than anything he has achieved in the AFL.

GEELONG superstar Jimmy Bartel says his work raising awareness about domestic violence is more important than anything he has achieved on the football field.

Speaking on the eve of his 300th game, Bartel said the ability to shed light on such a serious issue is one of his proudest achievements.

“Football is only one part of your life. That is what I have always been taught,” he said on AFL 360.

“I also understood that with football you have a great platform. If I am using my platform as a footballer to shed light on this issue, which is unfortunately so prevalent in our society, maybe change some people’s attitudes and behaviours, I would actually be prouder of that when my kids grow up.”

Bartel spoke to the Herald Sun earlier in the year about his own experiences with domestic violence.

He has also chosen not to shave his beard until the end of the season as part of his awareness campaign.

“When my son gets older and he has a laugh (about the beard) I hope he is proud of what I was trying to achieve more than my football career.”

Bartel said he had spoken to many people about their experiences with domestic violence and understands there is a lot more work still to be done.

“I am having a lot more conversations with broader society. It has come out two ways. I have been getting fantastic support but on a sadder note, the amount of people relating to it makes what I am trying to do even more important.

“Some people have gone through some horrific things in life but you also admire the way they have bounced back and they have gone on and done some great things.”
