Brayden Maynard alerted Collingwood’s bench to Jordan Roughead’s concussion after footy to the head

Collingwood defender Jordan Roughead suffered concussion after copping a falcon in the Pies’ loss to Richmond, but why did it take so long for the Pies to realise he was in trouble?

Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley has revealed the concussion suffered by Magpie defender Jordan Roughead in Friday night’s game against Richmond wasn’t picked up until a teammate flagged it with club officials.

Roughead copped a ball to the face in the first quarter of the Pies 32-point loss to the Tigers and was left dazed, but unchecked by an unaware Pies medical staff.

“He stayed upright,” Buckley said on AFL360.

“He doesn’t look like the most lively bouncy sort of player at the best of times.”

Roughead would later fumble an easy handball, leading to a Sydney Stack goal and alerting teammate Brayden Maynard to his predicament.

But Buckley said Maynard was unable to get a message to the bench until it was his turn for a rest.

“Brayden Maynard had rotated off and had the conversation and said ‘go and check out Roughy, because I don’t reckon he’s all there’ and that was seven or eight minutes after (the Stack goal),” Buckley said on AFL360.

“That’s when they grabbed him off and did the concussion (test), made it delayed concussion of some sort.

“I know that a few of our boys had a conversation — there was one bit of play where he (Roughead) got handballed the ball, he fumbled it and then Sydney Stack kicked a goal.

“The conversation went to Brayden Maynard and he (Roughead) said what happened then and he (Maynard) said ‘well you dropped the ball mate and we had a goal kicked against us’ and he (Roughead) goes, ‘I can’t even remember it’.

Roughead, at halftime, was ruled out for the rest of the match as the Tigers piled on the hurt.

His opponent, Tom Lynch, was running rampant and finished with five goals, but Buckley said Roughead was struggling throughout the second term.

“Tom Lynch played brilliantly, but Roughy wasn’t there for the second quarter,” he said.

Incredibly, Roughead wasn’t the only player to suffer injury from a falcon, with Sydney last night ruling out star defender Dane Rampe after he copped a ball to the eye in a freak accident in the Swans’ loss to Geelong.

Buckley believed the Pies may have detected the concussion earlier, had a runner been available.

“Maybe it would have been something we would have been able to go and check directly (if we had a runner),” he said.

The Pies were blitzed by the Tigers and also lost star Jordan De Goey and young gun Isaac Quaynor, the pair added to a long injury list ahead of the clash with bottom of the table Gold Coast.
