Collingwood wants its vaunted midfield to “hit the scoreboard” more in 2019 as the Magpies look to avenge last year’s Grand Final heartbreak.

Adam Treloar and Steele Sidebottom led the Pies chief ball winners with 12 goals apiece last season, while Scott Pendlebury and Taylor Adams added nine.

But the return of Dayne Beams will free up the engine room to “flick forward” and become more of a goalkicking threat.

INJURY SCARE: FYFE IN DOUBT FOR AFLX

NEW-LOOK: AFLX EXACTLY WHAT GAME NEEDS

Beams booted 18 goals last season, making him the sixth-most potent midfielder in the league.

Treloar has hailed the arrival of Beams and ex-Western Bulldogs swingman Jordan Roughead.

“We got a few that can go through there (midfield) and flick forward, hopefully hit the scoreboard, and even play outside on a wing,” Treloar said.

“It’s nice having the luxury of players that can play multiple positions and can be high quality at that, but the most important thing is ... making sure you contribute the right way to the team winning and that’s exactly what Beamsy wants to do and that’s exactly what Roughead wants to do, that’s why they came here.”

Roughead is likely to figure prominently for the Magpies early with Lynden Dunn (ACL) and Matt Scharenberg (ACL) still on the comeback trail from injury.

“Jordan Roughead has been first class for us,” Treloar said.

“He’s really going to strengthen up wherever he plays, whether it’s ruck, forward or back, his experience and versatility is unreal.”

Desperate to avenge last year’s Grand Final loss the Magpies have ramped up preparations ahead of the upcoming intraclub and JLT Series matches.

Treloar has noticed the shift in motivation since the start of lively match simulation sessions.

“It’s so much better than running laps and doing handball drills,” Treloar said.

“Being so close to winning a premiership (last year), initially it absolutely killed us, it broke our hearts that we couldn’t win, but we’ve come back hungrier.

“We’re keen as ever for the season to start and put in a good display in the JLT Community Series and attack the season the way we did last year and hopefully go all the way.”
