Carlton says David Teague still in the mix for coaching job despite Chris Judd’s comments

Football director Chris Judd was emphatic Carlton needed an experienced coach, which meant caretaker coach David Teague was out of the running. But the Blues tell Mark Robinson that isn’t the case.

Carlton has backed away from football director Chris Judd’s comments on Monday that the club doesn’t want a coach “with training wheels on’’.

Judd was speaking in his role as a media commentator on Channel Nine, the clear indication being caretaker coach David Teague was not a candidate for the full-time role.

But the Blues said Teague remained a contender.

”We haven’t ruled anyone in or out,’’ chief executive Cain Liddle.

“The public position we’ve taken is we’ve announced who the panel is and as much as we would like to run a commentary for our members it just gets too complicated, evidenced by Juddy being put on the spot last night.

“As a result we’ve decided to shut it down and make no comment.’’

Asked specifically about Judd’s comments, Liddle said: “I don’t have a view on his comments because we’re not commenting.’’

The emphatic view of Judd, who is one of the selectors of the new coach, was the Blues want an experienced coach.

“I think we have said publicly we want an experienced coach that can take us to the next level,’’ Judd said.

Names linked to the vacant role who have senior experience include departed North Melbourne coach Brad Scott, Swans premiership coach Paul Roos and former Brisbane coach Michael Voss.

A Roos-Voss partnership has also been mooted, with Voss coaching and Roos in a director-of-coaching type role.

The current coaches in the official betting markets include Fremantle’s Ross Lyon, Hawthorn’s Alastair Clarkson, Port Adelaide’s Ken Hinkley and Sydney’s John Longmire.

North Melbourne has made contact with Longmire’s management, which was publicly revealed by Longmire’s manager Liam Pickering in his role as a media commentator, which disappointed North officials.

The Kangaroos offer has not been answered by Longmire.

It was reported at the weekend Longmire has an offer from Sydney to extend his contract until the end of 2022. It is believed the North Melbourne offer starts at five years.

If Longmire stays, Rhyce Shaw will be the short-priced favourite to land the Kangaroos job.

After Judd’s comments, the same confidence can’t be levelled at Teague.

He has coached four games and will coach the remaining seven of the season and, at 38, that probably constitutes a coach with training wheels.

“We’re pretty clear on the attributes we want from our next coach and which attributes are more of a priority than others,” Judd said.

Asked if he classed Teague as coach with training wheels, he said: “He is getting some really good coaching experience now.

“He has in effect coached his own team, but that’s not really the same as being an actual senior coach of a football team with the pressure that comes with that.”

It is not known if Teague was aware of Judd’s position on potential candidates and has previously indicated he was keen to be a contender.

After the Blues defeated Fremantle, Teague said of coaching the Blues: “Right now, I’m having a ball. I’m absolutely loving it.

“I’m going to enjoy every moment of it. Where it ends up, it ends up, but right now I’m having fun.’’
