Tayla takes a screamer

BRISBANE Lions are struggling but there might be some light at the end of the tunnel, in the women’s league at least.

Tayla Harris, a 19-year-old Queenslander, took a huge hanger in the QWAFL on Saturday while playing with Zillmere.

The good news? Harris signed with Brisbane as the club’s first ever women’s player last Friday ahead of the introduction of the national league next year.

It was a speccy even Demon-turned-Magpie Jeremy Howe would be proud of as she attacked a teammate’s long bomb out of defence and used an opposition player as a stepladder before taking the mark overhead.

Harris even completed it with a spectacular landing before getting up to take her kick.

Who said women’s footy isn’t exciting?

It wasn’t the first time Harris had fans out of their seat. In 2014, while playing for Melbourne against Western Bulldogs in a women’s exhibition game at Etihad Stadium at just 17 years of age, Harris took a speccy in a pack, posterising a teammate.

She also took another brilliant pack mark in the exhibition match played at the MCG last year.

Harris is Brisbane’s marquee signing ahead of the introduction of the national women’s competition next year and will take on a full-time role at the club, driving female participation.

“We’re delighted to have signed Tayla,” Brisbane Lions CEO Greg Swann said.

“Tayla is one of the most talented, young female prospects in the country, her signing is critical to the development of Women’s AFL in Queensland.”

In the AFL this weekend, Bulldogs Easton Wood, Kangaroo Mason Wood and Sun Tom Lynch were nominated for mark of the year but Harris’s definitely gets our vote.

Can take a grab.
