AFL 2022: Every club’s predicted 22 for round 13 of the AFL season

Tom McDonald looks set for an extended period on the sidelines, so the time is now for Sam Weideman to make a Demons forward line spot his own.

The predicted ins and outs for round 13
The predicted ins and outs for round 13

Round 13 sees the second of three bye rounds in the AFL and some sides are set to regain some key personnel for the back half of the year. The Lions are set to see the return of a star forward, the Cats should get back Patrick Dangerfield as well as a forgotten midfielder. See every side’s predicted side for this week’s matches and for those who have the bye.

ADELAIDE (after the bye)

B: W.Hamill, J.Butts, L.Brown

HB: B.Smith, T.Doedee, J.Dawson

C: J.Hately, B.Keays, J.Soligo

HF: W.Milera, R.Thilthorpe, J.Rowe

F: S.McAdam, T.Walker, J.Rachele

FOLL: R.O’Brien, R.Laird, S.Berry

I/C: D.Fogarty, N.McHenry, M.Crouch, M.Hinge

IN: J.Rachele, J.Butts, L.Brown

OUT: L.Murphy (omitted), N.Murray (omitted), P. Parnell (omitted)

The Crows are expected to make a couple of changes when their season resumes after the bye. No. 6 draftee Josh Rachele will be ready to go after missing the last two matches through a cork and then being managed. Jordon Butts and Luke Brown will be available after stints in the AFL’s concussion and Covid-19 protocols respectively. Paddy Parnell played well on his debut but suffered a big cork and could be an unlucky omission. Lachie Murphy has not hit the scoreboard enough this season for the Crows.

IN: J. Daniher, M. Robinson

OUT: D. Robertson (omitted), J. Prior (omitted)

Joe Daniher is set to return in a much needed boost for the Lions who have done well in his absence. But it does create a selection headache. Darcy Fort has been a more than handy second ruck support for Oscar McInerney while Eric Hipwood and Dan McStay pick themselves in the Lions forward line. Suspect coach Chris Fagan trials all the tall timber in the one side against the Saints. Darcy Gardiner suffered a knock to the ribs against the Dockers but fingers crossed he will get up for this week.

The big watch is on Harry McKay who is edging closer to a return - and could yet play - but looks more likely for next week. He will be closely monitored this week. Matt Kennedy is a chance to return while Jack Martin will likely take on the Bombers. Michael Voss announced on Tuesday that Caleb Marchbank will play his first match in 1069 days in an emotional return, saying: “Marchy, you’re playing this week’..

Jamie Elliott will return for the Queen’s Birthday clash with Melbourne after being a late withdrawal last week. Reef McInnes faces another frustrating stint on the sidelines due to injury. There are a number of players pushing for selection via the VFL, while Tyler Brown was stiff to be made the sub last week and will come under consideration again.

ESSENDON

Forward Jake Stringer is expected to return for the Bombers after missing the past four games with a hamstring. Defender Mason Redman is available again after missing Essendon’s last game through suspension, while small forward Matt Guelfi missed the last match before the bye with a hamstring.

FREMANTLE

B: H.Young, A.Pearce, G.Logue

HB: B.Cox, L.Ryan, B.Walker

OUT: L.Meek, D.Tucker, L.Schultz (all omitted)

They couldn’t keep champion Nat Fyfe in the reserves two weeks in a row, could they? Coach Justin Longmuir is confident the champion will be back after he picked up 24 disposals, five marks and four inside 50s in his first WAFL game in 12 years, and it might well be his last. Taberner (back spams) and Walters are also in contention after missing last week with injury. Meek may be the unlucky one to come out after a promising display.

GEELONG (after the bye)

B: T. Stewart, S. De Koning, M. Blicavs

HB: Z. Tuohy, Z. Guthrie, J. Bews

C: M. Duncan, C. Guthrie, S. Menegola

HF: I. Smith, J. Cameron, G. Rohan

IN: P. Dangerfield, J. Kolodjashnij, S. Menegola

OUT: B. Parfitt (hand), C. Stephens (omitted), L. Dahlhaus (omitted)

The Cats had grand plans of piecing together their best 22 shortly after the bye, but have lost Brandan Parfitt to a broken hand. The cavalry is on the way back though. Patrick Dangerfield’s mini pre-season should have him ready to fire in the back half of the year, Sam Menegola (knee) got through his VFL return last weekend and Jake Kolodjashnij should be right after missing the Western Bulldogs clash after entering Covid protocols. Max Holmes and Esava Ratugolea are both running after their respective ankle surgeries but may be eased back, alongside Jack Henry, who is not far away but may need VFL time after not playing since round 5. Shaun Higgins (soreness) should be available and Jonathon Ceglar (foot) is not far off either. Cooper Stephens may be squeezed out of the midfield, while Luke Dahlhaus appears set to bounce up and down between the seniors and reserves.

The Suns confirmed yesterday the heartbreaking news that Lachie Weller had suffered a season eding ACL injury. He will be a tough player to replace given his dash and workrate off half back. Jack Bowes dominated in his VFL outing with 39 disposals and two goals. Levi Casboult missed with a calf complaint but expect him to be available after the bye.

OUT: B. Hill (personal reasons), Z. Sproule (omitted), L. Keeffe (omitted)

Lachie Whitfield faces a test to prove his fitness for Sunday’s clash against North Melbourne but expect him to return the Mark McVeigh’s side. It’s not good news for Tim Taranto though who faces more weeks on the sidelines with a back issue. The bye break didn’t serve the Giants well with Finn Callaghan, Daniel Lloyd, Brent Daniels and Conor Stone all out for an larger period than first thought.

The Swans got on top of Melbourne’s key defenders last week but Adam Tomlinson will receive a reprieve with Steven May receiving a one-match club-imposed suspension for off field ill-discipline. Mitch Brown went goalless as Tom McDonald’s replacement and could make way for Weideman, who kicked three goals and had 10 marks in the VFL. Rivers was unlucky to be dropped last week and was another of the Demons’ best in the reserves, while Hunt recorded just the three handballs on Saturday night.

Key defender Ben McKay will miss after suffering a concussion against the Suns on Saturday. Defender Kayne Turner managed just three touches in that match. Jaidyn Stephenson had 26 disposals in the VFL on the weekend and is expected to receive a recall, while Charlie Lazzaro was also good in the seconds with 26 touches and will come under consideration.

Expect the Power to go in unchanged to take on Richmond as their season resumes after the mid-season bye. The only decision Ken Hinkley will really have to make is whether Jeremy Finlayson holds his spot ahead of Mitch Georgiades.

I/C: N.Broad, J.Graham, I.Soldo, M.Rioli

IN: N. Balta, M.Pickett

OUT: J.Castagna, J.Ross (both omitted)

Damien Hardwick conceded he went in too small up forward against Sydney, and returning swingman Balta looks to be the solution with Tom Lynch (hamstring) set to miss another week. It would leave the Tigers undersized in defence matching up on Port Adelaide’s bevy of tall forwards, but Hardwick said he is happy with his defensive mix and Nathan Broad (192cm) and Dylan Grimes (193cm) can player taller. Pickett (migraine) and Lambert (hip) are in contention to return but you suspect they’ll be cautious with Lambert. Castagna is coming off two handballs in his last game and may be the unlucky one to make way.

ST KILDA

HB: B.Paton, J.Sinclair, B.Hill

C: D.McKenzie, S.Ross, B.Long

FOLL: P.Ryder, B.Crouch, M.Owens

INT: Z.Jones, J.Webster, N.Wanganeen-Milera, J.Higgins

IN: J.Higgins

OUT: C.Sharman

There’s a selection squeeze at the Saints, with a host of players putting their hands up for returns but few spots in the side seemingly up for grabs. Jack Higgins (concussion) is available to return after missing a month and is probably the only automatic inclusion. However, small forward Dan Butler booted five goals from 23 touches for Sandringham in the VFL before the bye, while defender Hunter Clark is also available for what would be his first AFL game of the season. Midfielder Jack Billings also played VFL last round and was solid with 24 disposals and one goal.

John Longmire said in his post-match he hopes to regain injured pair Tom Hickey and Harry Cunningham back after the bye. The question remains whether both come straight back into the side given how well the Swans have fared in the past two weeks. It will be a selection dilemma with their tall timber given the form of Logan McDonald, Sam Reid and Peter Ladhams. But it might be a case of figuring out a way to fit them all in. Lance Franklin will also be back after serving his one-game suspension for striking Trent Cotchin.

OUT: B.Williams, L.Foley, B.Hough, S.Petrevski-Seton (all omitted), I.Winder (injured)

West Coast’s forward line is set to get an injection of much-needed spark after the bye with Ryan, Rioli, Petrucelle all in the mix to return from injury. All three could get a run in the legs in the WAFL this week, but will all get picked in the seniors? McGovern should be back after he was a late withdrawal last round, while three games in the WAFL could be enough for Sheed - who racked up 27 disposals over the weekend - by the time round 14 rolls around. Elliott Yeo on the other hand could spend more time on the sidelines if he cops a suspension for an incident in the WAFL. KFC SuperCoach teams will be hoping ruckman Luke Strnadica will come back in after recovering from a calf injury and they might just get their wish.

Bailey Smith will miss the next two matches through suspension for his headbutt on Geelong’s Zach Tuohy last Friday night. Josh Bruce, Toby McLean and Lachie Hunter are all nearing returns from injury and personal leave. Bruce was cleared last week to return to full-contact training and is eyeing a VFL return after the bye.
