ADELAIDE will have to find a third-party broker — or convince a current Crow to move to Carlton — if the Bryce Gibbs go-home trade is to be sealed by Thursday’s deadline.
And Greater Western Sydney — that has two Giants on Carlton’s wish list — says it is not interested in becoming the facilitator to end the Gibbs impasse.
Giants list manager Craig Cameron today dismissed working GWS pair Caleb Marchbank and Jarrod Pickett, who have both nominated Carlton as their destination club, into a three-way deal with Adelaide.
“That is for them (the Crows) and Carlton to work out,” Cameron said today of the stalled Gibbs trade.
Adelaide has first-round draft pick No. 13 — but no second-round pick in next month’s draft — to engineer a trade for the contracted, 209-game Gibbs. But while this seems “fair value” for the 2006 No. 1 draftee, the Blues are making an in-principle stand against trading a player who has just completed the second season of a five-year contract.
This leaves the Crows needing to entice Carlton with a significant player — and perhaps its 2017 second-round draft pick rather than this year’s No. 13.
This deal will have to be done through Gibb’s manager Nigel Carmody as Carlton is refusing to enter direct talks with Adelaide since the clubs’ meeting at the start of trade meetings at Etihad Stadium on Monday.
AFL list analysts say Adelaide has just three players who can satisfy Carlton to release 27-year-old Gibbs:
CHARLIE CAMERON. But to release the 22-year-old small forward as he is about to convert to a midfielder will deny the Crows engine much-needed new speed.
JAKE LEVER. Trading the 21-year-old key defender would force Adelaide to look at refitting young forward Mitch McGovern to defence or looking at a late trade play on contracted West Coast defender Eric Mackenzie.
MITCH McGOVERN. As Adelaide has stockpiled forwards, this is the best option — more so if the 21-year-old West Australian is seen as vulnerable to his own go-home move to join brother Jeremy at West Coast or to collect a richer contract at Fremantle.
McGovern’s manager Colin Young — along with Cameron’s management — have declared no interest in becoming part of the Gibbs’ trade.
Adelaide has at least two other plays in the trade period on hold. Uncontracted midfielder Jarryd Lyons, who has been passed up by Carlton, is waiting for as many six suitors to deliver a deal t the Crows.
Unrestricted free agent Ricky Henderson, who could deliver a compensation draft pick to Adelaide, has his future working against tomorrow’s (Sunday’s) 4.30pm deadline for free agency.
PORT ADELAIDE is now out of the running for Geelong forward Nathan Vardy who was the Power’s back-up option if contracted ruckman Matthew Lobbe found a new home in this trade period.
Vardy is now locking in his future at West Coast.
Gold Coast, after contacting Power midfielder Brendon Ah Chee’s management to plant the seed of joining his younger brother Callum at the Suns next season, has become more focused on closing deals with Hawthorn and Richmond on Jaeger O’Meara and Dion Prestia respectively.
The trade period closes at 1.30pm Thursday.
