The Phantom’s Round 10 review: After a season-low against the Hawks, Travis Boak leads the list of post-Round 12 trade targets as the bye-period nears

The bye-rounds are getting closer, SuperCoaches and it’s time to get your trading plan in place. And it starts with Travis Boak. Plus which in-form Giant is a must-have this week?

Enjoy the next few days – and a big score if you had one - SuperCoaches because the dreaded three-week bye-round period is almost upon us.

After next week, Essendon, Fremantle, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide, St Kilda and Western Bulldogs will all have the week off in Round 12.

Hopefully, you’ve worked out a basic bye-round trading plan.

Because after some indifferent scores in Round 10, the right upgrade targets are starting to become clearer.

Let’s start with those from the six teams who will be out of action in the first week.

Port Adelaide’s Travis Boak, the top-scoring SuperCoach forward in the game, posted his lowest score of the season against the Hawks in Tasmania.

Boak’s 77-point performance saw his price fall to $515k and, with a breakeven of 123 in the Round 11 clash against the Saints in China, is likely to remain at that price, making him the perfect trade-in option after the first bye-round.

After a return to the midfield in Round 7, Bulldog Josh Dunkley has posted three scores of 130 or more in his past four matches.

Only Cat Tim Kelly – who posted a game-high 140 points against the Suns - boasts a better five-round average than Dunkley of all SuperCoach-eligible forwards.

While, as a pure-midfielder, Dunkley has him covered for scoring, teammate Caleb Daniel could be the better buy ahead of Round 13.

Daniel posted a SuperCoach ton – his sixth of the season – against the Kangaroos after two quiet weeks. The rebounding-defender, who has scored 93 or more in eight of his 10 matches this season, is the 10th-most expensive forward, despite ranking sixth for total points.

You’ll need to use your money wisely over the next month so I’d consider all three ahead of top-priced forward David Mundy, who is now averaging 105 points per game, despite scoring a combined 108 points in the opening two rounds.

In the midfield, if you don’t have Bulldog Jack Macrae, who posted his eighth score of 100 or more this season in Round 10, he should be your main target, given the $97k discount on his starting price should remain with a breakeven of 130.

Docker Nat Fyfe posted his sixth SuperCoach ton on the trot on Sunday against the Lions and is likely to be available for less than his starting price after the Round 12 bye.

In defence, with a breakeven of 133, Hawk James Sicily’s price might fall below $500k after the intercepting-defender posted his third score of 91 or less in the past month against the Power.

It might not cost you much to trade Demon Marty Hore – ahead of his bye - to Sicily, after the mature-age recruit notched the first SuperCoach ton of his career in Round 10.

Docker Luke Ryan is also another Round 12 defender to consider after his 131 points – his third score of 130 or more for the year – in the win over the Lions saw him move into third spot for total points.

But remember, there’s plenty of other options – some, potentially, better – who will miss in either Round 13 or 14.

It’s why planning is essential as you might only have limited spots to fill.

Brisbane’s Lachie Neale, the second-highest scoring player in the game, posted a season-low 79 points against his old side in Round 10.

The ball-magnet, who will have a week off in Round 12, now faces a breakeven of 144, a number which, if he doesn’t reach it, will be even higher next week after the 148-point performance against the Crows drops out of his three-round rolling average.

Ideally, don’t go looking to trade any players in this week who will miss either of the first two bye rounds.

Some SuperCoaches won’t make any upgrades now before the byes – and there’s merit in that strategy – but there’s always exceptions.

And, this week, his name is Lachie Whitfield.

The star Giant worked through the attention of Demon Corey Wagner to finish with 29 disposals, two goals and 115 points on Sunday.

Whitfield lost $300 off his price tag, which is about to sky-rocket again after it took a big hit following the injury-affected 45 against the Swans.

With a breakeven of 46, a big score against the Suns at home, something which is very likely, could result in Whitfield’s price surging close to $600k.

The time is now.

And if you like his teammate Jeremy Cameron, this could also be the cheapest he’ll get for some time, too.

After three consecutive price drops following the 29-point performance against the Hawks, Cameron has a Round 11 breakeven of 74 and could have a field day against the Suns.
