SuperCoach AFL stats dossier: Full CBAs, kick-ins, time on ground for round 13, top captain picks for round 14

Exclusive Champion Data numbers show many points every team concedes in every position – vital intel when picking a SuperCoach captain. See our top picks.

The two topscoring players in SuperCoach this season are rucks, and three of the top four for three-round average play that position.

So it should be the starting point for captaincy decisions each week. Round 14 is no exception, which means we might be again waiting until later in the round for a VC.

Tristan Xerri hasn’t scored under 126 for eight weeks and faces Fremantle on Saturday night. That likely means he’ll be double-teamed by Sean Darcy and Luke Jackson. The pair has played together once in the past five weeks, against Gold Coast in round 12. Jarrod Witts scored 71 in that game, but in Xerri’s form he still makes a fantastic VC candidate.

Max Gawn plays on Sunday against Port Adelaide and fifth-gamer Dante Visentini, who gave up 163 points to Luke Jackson before his bye. There is a chance Jordon Sweet is recalled after scoring 205 points in the SANFL, but Gawn played Port twice last year – and scored 177 both times.

Tom De Koning owners can happily VC either of the big two – or another option (see below) with De Koning a safe back-up in the last game of the round. After monstering Todd Goldstein last week (146 points), he has the best ruck match-up in the game. Matt Flynn matched Xerri for a half last week before being totally overrun (final tally 153-79).

WHO TO TARGET THIS WEEK

Midfielders v Melbourne, West Coast, Adelaide, North Melbourne – This could be a good week to get Zak Butters! He is in the captaincy mix against the leakiest midfield in the AFL ... unless Ed Langdon is on another Nick Daicos-style mission. Andrew Brayshaw has the fifth-best match-up for midfielders and averages 121 in his past three against the Kangaroos.

St Kilda is mid-table when it comes to restricting opposition midfielders, but Marcus Bontempelli has a great record against the Saints – 159, 125, 125 in his past three.

Rucks v Carlton, Western Bulldogs – Based on scores all season Tim English is a favourable match-up for rucks, but Rowan Marshall’s past two scores against the Bulldogs are 65 and 51.

General defenders v St Kilda, West Coast, Fremantle – Ross Lyon doesn’t seem to mind letting defenders run free, which could mean big things for Bailey Dale, who scored 175 against the Saints last season. Sam Docherty should score well again back in his favoured quarterback role. Fremantle has also given up points to half-backs this season so coaches taking the punt on Colby McKercher should get an instant reward.

WHO TO AVOID THIS WEEK

Midfielders v Brisbane, Western Bulldogs, Fremantle, Hawthorn – Tough match-ups for Giants, Saints, Kangaroos and Crows midfielders this week. The Giants are generally a mid-table match-up but expect Toby Bedford to get a job one of Brisbane’s prime movers.

General defenders v Carlton, GWS, Essendon, Adelaide – Another rough week for Dayne Zorko coming? The Giants have conceded the second-fewest points to general defenders.

Where do you deploy your most dangerous asset?

It’s a question Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks wrestles with on a weekly basis when it comes to matchwinner Izak Rankine – and the answer right now is not what SuperCoaches want to hear.

Rankine has attended upwards of 70 per cent of centre bounces in some games this year, but he has been closer to 40 per cent in the past three rounds, attending 11 in Friday night’s win against Brisbane (50 per cent).

Just three of those came in the first half, when Rankine scored 21 SuperCoach points. A move into the midfield after halftime paid dividends – eight CBAs and 69 SuperCoach points.

Despite his obvious scoring power, Rankine hasn’t cracked three figures since round 8 – the last time he had over 60 per cent CBAs for a full game.

He is just one SuperCoach star being impacted by major magnet moves.

Lachie Whitfield has a three-round average of 94 – and has lost almost $50,000 in that time – as he spends more time forward, while Zach Merrett is being thrown all over the ground. After playing as a defender in round 12, he spent 51 per cent of game time in round 13 as a forward against Carlton as he tried to shake an Alex Cincotta tag, attending just 34 per cent of centre bounces (he also managed to take three kick-ins). His SuperCoach scores are also suffering, posting just one over 100 in his past five games.

Champion Data’s weekly SuperCoach stats report also reveals:

ALASTAIR Clarkson spun the magnets at North Melbourne, sending Colby McKercher to defence for the first time this year (six kick-ins) and Harry Sheezel getting a spike in centre bounces. The moves worked for both players, with McKercher scoring a season-high 144 SuperCoach points and Sheezel’s 137 his best since round 4.

TOM Liberatore’s centre bounces plunging from 33 to 11 as Adam Treloar returned to the Bulldogs’ line-up.

GIANT Brent Daniels scoring 83 SuperCoach points in 59 per cent game time on his return from a long-term injury. He attended seven centre bounces.

NIC Martin attending two centre bounces, down from 19 the week before. He took four kick-ins from full-back.
